Job description

Job Title: Laboratory Lead Technologist – Histologist
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Shift: 2nd Shift
Compensation: $32.00 – $50.00 per hour, based on experience
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Lead Technologist – Histologist to join our laboratory team on the 2nd shift. Under the supervision of the Faculty Advisor and Laboratory Manager, the Lead Technologist will be responsible for planning, maintaining, and monitoring the operations within a defined area of testing. This position ensures compliance with all regulatory standards and plays a key role in supporting the overall quality and functionality of histology services.

This opportunity is ideal for a motivated, detail-oriented professional with strong leadership skills and a commitment to excellence in laboratory diagnostics and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and oversee daily operations of a specified scope of testing within the histology department.

  • Maintain and update laboratory procedures and equipment per institutional and regulatory guidelines.

  • Ensure full compliance with accreditation standards (CAP, TJC, CMS, AABB).

  • Oversee instrument quality control performance and schedule required maintenance.

  • Manage reagent and supply inventories to ensure efficient and cost-effective operation.

  • Perform complex laboratory procedures and assist in specimen evaluation and troubleshooting.

  • Provide support and guidance to laboratory personnel and serve as a technical resource.

  • Participate in ongoing process improvement, regulatory readiness, and documentation.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental goals and workflow.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree with completion of a NAACLS-accredited MLS/CLS program

    • OR Bachelor’s in Biology, Chemistry, or related science

    • OR Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a NAACLS-approved MLT program

    • OR Associate Degree with 60 semester hours with 6 credit hours each in Chemistry and Biology, and accredited MLT training

  • Experience: 3 years of relevant experience

  • License/Certification: HT or HTL ASCP certification (MLT, MT, or categorical), or equivalent required
