What does an entry level mechanical engineer do?

An entry level mechanical engineer assists in the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of mechanical devices, such as engines, tools, and machines. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers to learn industry practices and gain hands-on experience. Their tasks often include using computer-aided design (CAD) software, creating prototypes, conducting experiments, and analyzing data. Entry level engineers also help prepare technical reports and documentation while collaborating with other engineering teams.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry level mechanical engineer expect to work on in their first year?

As an entry level mechanical engineer, you will typically be involved in a variety of projects that support more senior engineers. Your tasks may include creating and revising CAD drawings, assisting with prototype development, conducting basic calculations and simulations, and performing hands-on testing in the lab or on the production floor. You'll also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and design. This exposure helps you build foundational technical skills while learning effective teamwork and communication in a professional engineering environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, CAD design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of industry standards, is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking skills help you collaborate effectively and adapt to project needs. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting project deadlines, and integrating smoothly into engineering teams.

What is the difference between Entry Level Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Designer?

AspectEntry Level Mechanical EngineerMechanical Designer

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Entry Level Mechanical Engineers focus on applying engineering principles to design, analyze, and test mechanical systems, often working on projects from concept to prototype. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD drawings and models for manufacturing and assembly. While both roles require a mechanical engineering background, engineers typically engage in broader engineering tasks, whereas designers concentrate on detailed design work.

How to get into entry level mechanical engineering with no experience?

Entry level mechanical engineering positions often require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Gaining relevant skills through internships, co-op programs, or personal projects, and learning industry tools like CAD software, can improve your chances; certifications such as Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) may also be beneficial.

Job description

At Senra Systems, we believe that the future of manufacturing lies not in automation, but in configuration.

We supercharge electrical wire harness manufacturing through software configuration, transforming skilled assembly tasks into high-throughput production lines. We enable customers to design what they want, when they want it and deliver harness builds at record-breaking speed.

Senra Systems is seeking an entry-level Test Technician to join our production team. In this role, you will perform functional, electrical, and/or mechanical testing on manufactured components and assemblies to verify they meet engineering specifications, drawing requirements, and customer quality standards. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their manufacturing career to build hands-on experience in an aerospace production environment, working closely with technicians, quality, and engineering.

What you'll own:

  • Perform testing and inspection of parts and assemblies per work instructions, test procedures, and customer specifications.
  • Set up and operate test equipment (e.g., multimeters, calipers, gauges, and test fixtures) to verify functional performance and dimensional conformance.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T callouts to determine pass/fail criteria.
  • Accurately record test data, results, and non-conformances in accordance with quality system requirements.
  • Identify and report defects, out-of-spec conditions, or process issues to supervisors and engineering.
  • Assist with maintaining and tracking calibration status of test equipment; flag equipment needing calibration or repair.
  • Provide on-the-floor support to production technicians as needed.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and 5S/housekeeping standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and traceability records in compliance with company and customer quality requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts that support quality, safety, and throughput goals.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing, testing, or quality environment (internships, trade school, or military technical training considered).
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions.
  • Basic understanding of measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) preferred.
  • Comfortable using a computer for data entry and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Willingness to learn new testing procedures, tools, and equipment.

Bonus Points:

  • Prior experience in aerospace, defense, or another regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical and/or mechanical test equipment.

Compensation:

  • Compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
  • Hourly Range: $24.00- $30.00
  • This is an onsite role at our facility in Cypress, CA.

Benefits:

  • Own a piece of the pie with equity participation!
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability coverage
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Dependent Spending Account (DSA) for health-related expenses
  • 20 vacation days per year and 12 company holidays for rest and relaxation
  • a 401(k) plan to set yourself up for retirement
  • Choose a record you love, and we'll add it to our growing vinyl collection!
  • $50/month DoorDash credit – lunch is on us!
  • Up to $100/month reimbursement for gym memberships
  • Fully stocked kitchen with snacks and beverages
