Job description

Job Purpose
Responsible for developing current and future engineering designs. Responsible for integrating product design, performance, and manufacturing through the use of CAD, CAE, 3D Modeling and test to meet product requirements. Maintains daily contact with engineering functions as programs are develop, finalized, and put into production. Make decisions within the limits of general practices and standards with some direct guidance from supervisor.
Designs, analyzes, tests, and validates products and subsystems for performance/reliability improvement and cost reduction. Supports manufacturing and field service for new and existing components and designs. Designs and supports manufacturing solutions and collaborates with other supporting groups to rapidly develop new
applications for a wide range of various locomotive systems within assigned functional area.

Education / Training
• BS in Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of formal education and direct work experience required.
Key Job Elements
Duties and responsibilities (Note: duties/qualifications required will depend on assigned division)
• Provides direction to designers and drafters in the creation and modification of engineering drawings and
models;
• Supports production by diagnosing and solving problems with materials and processes to maintain or
improve quality;
• Leads design reviews for assigned systems and participates in reviews for other systems; works with
vendors and suppliers to specify new components and select appropriate components for designs;
collaborates with engineers of other disciplines to integrate components into higher-level machine
designs;
• Supports operations and service organizations in implementing and maintaining product through life
cycle; works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and supporting functions to identify and
address any issues affecting productivity and quality;
• Responsible for new product development, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods; utilizes data
to plan and strategize countermeasures for equipment and process issues;
• Develops, writes, and coordinates Design Change Requests (DCR) and Manufacturing Change Requests
(MCR) processes;
• Remains current on engineering resources and new products/processes; completes assigned Required
Learning modules;
Conducts testing and inspections at manufacturing and customer sites as required;
• Communicates with supply chain to purchase necessary components;
• Leads and manages projects, trains engineers and team members to ensure other functions meet
appropriate specifications;
• Performs additional job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
• Perform all responsibilities in accordance with "Our Values in Action, Caterpillar's Code of Conduct."
Competent in engineering design/CAD software; able to perform standard engineering design calculations
(stress, strain, heat transfer, pipe flows, etc.);
• Knowledge of diesel engines and engine components; locomotive engineering background preferred;
shop level locomotive experience beneficial;
• Knowledge of applied mechanics, vibrations, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and
manufacturing techniques;
• Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software; ability to accurately design, CAD and check a project with minimal
supervision;
• Proficiency in computer programs relevant to assigned position, e.g., Matlab, PSIM, PLEX, NX Unigraphics,
SAP, ERP LN 10.7, BAAN ERP, FEA, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD 2D, and Progress Rails specific programs
and applications;
• Ability to read and understand specification and standards documents; proficient in interpreting and
creating engineering drawings;
• Experience with project estimating and order management;
• Strong familiarity with rail standards;
• Communication skills (both oral and written), multi-tasking, and organizational skills;
• Strong attention to detail; strong problem solving, investigative and collaborative skills;
• High level of interpersonal skills; ability to work together in a team environment;
• Proficiency with MS Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) MS Teams and/or Cisco WebEx.
Qualifications and Experience
• Manages projects, checks other engineers' work, trains new employees, and communicates with
customers when necessary;
• Leads and manages projects, trains engineers and team members to ensure other functions meet
appropriate specifications;
• Works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and supporting functions to identify and address
any issues affecting productivity and quality;
• Responsible for new product development, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods; utilizes data
to plan and strategize countermeasures for equipment and process issues;
• Develops, writes, and coordinates Design Change Requests (DCR) and Manufacturing Change Requests
(MCR) processes;
• Coordinates the manufacturing launch of new/revised products including goals and evaluating results;
• Reformulates the development and testing processes to match with latest industry standards and makes
sure the team is aligned with the process and deliverables to meet the target goals; works with suppliers
or redesigning and validating new designs as necessary;

• High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult;
• Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design;

• Must be familiar with basic structural engineering concepts and manufacturing processes;
• Strong written skills to provide technical reports and operating procedures;
• Strong interpersonal skills are essential to effectively communicate with co-workers and senior management;
• Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams, and coordinate with internal departments as well as outside suppliers;
• Self-starter and with the ability to work independently with little supervision on complex design analyses.
