What does an entry level marine chemist do?

Entry level marine chemists typically assist in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting chemical data from ocean and coastal environments. They may sample water, sediments, or marine organisms to measure chemical properties such as salinity, nutrient levels, pollutants, and trace metals. Their work helps monitor ocean health, understand marine processes, and support environmental protection efforts. Entry level roles often involve laboratory testing, fieldwork, maintaining equipment, and recording results under the supervision of senior scientists.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level marine chemists in their first year on the job?

Entry-level marine chemists often encounter challenges such as adapting to fieldwork in variable and sometimes harsh marine environments, mastering specialized sampling and analytical techniques, and learning to interpret complex data. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including biologists and oceanographers, is common and requires effective communication skills. Additionally, balancing laboratory duties with fieldwork and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations are key aspects of the role that new hires must quickly become proficient in.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level marine chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Marine Chemist, you generally need a bachelor's degree in chemistry, marine science, or a related field, with a solid understanding of laboratory techniques and chemical analysis. Familiarity with analytical instruments like spectrophotometers, chromatographs, and data analysis software is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in both field and laboratory settings. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring accurate research, safety compliance, and meaningful contributions to marine environmental studies.

$20.19 - $23.10/hr

Full-time

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

The Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking applicants for an entry-level Research Assistant I position with the C Marsh Project. Coastal marshes support extremely high plant productivity under challenging environmental conditions. The C Marsh project is examining how high plant production and high carbon burial are maintained in this very dynamic environment. This part of the project focuses on iron and sulfur cycling in coastal marsh sediments.

The position is based in Woods Hole and involves a mix of lab and field work. We seek individuals with strong experience in independent research (e.g., senior thesis or REU project) and coursework with laboratory and field components. Applicants should have a demonstrated aptitude for biology, chemistry, and ecology, including advanced coursework and have an interest in learning biogeochemical techniques. The successful applicant will gain broad experience in careful laboratory analyses, with a focus on sulfur, iron and carbon as well as learning field techniques. The field work is carried out in the marshes surrounding Plum Island Sound, north of Boston. During the field work season candidates make 1 to 3 trips to the field station for 1-3 days each month. Experience with small boats is desirable as well as higher level chemistry courses that included a lab.

The preferred starting date is Oct 5 but is somewhat flexible.

Closing Date for Applications:

September 11, 2026

Basic Qualifications:

This is an entry level position, requiring a B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Ecology.

Physical Requirements:

The applicant should be capable of getting into and out of small boats and walking significant distances across salt marshes.

The preferred starting date is Oct 5 but is somewhat flexible.

Application Instructions:

Please submit the following documents with your application:

  • Cover Letter, which should include a description of how this position addresses your long-term goals.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume
