General Description
Construction Laborers typically have previous experience working in road construction; predominately working with their hands, feet and using consistent thought process in decision making and executing instructions.
Key Duties
Construction Laborers are responsible for carrying out a wide range of physical responsibilities which may include:
  • Measures distance from grade stakes, drives stakes, and stretches tight line.
  • Observe excavating activities to verify conformance to stake references.
  • Reads survey stake along highway right of way to determine grade specification for embankment.
  • Bolts, nails, aligns, and block up under forms.
  • Signals operators of construction or asphalt equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
  • Level earth or asphalt to grade specifications, using picks, shovels and rakes.
  • Variety of tasks involving dexterous use of hands and tools, such as sawing lumber, dismantling forms, removing projections from concrete, and mounting pipe hangers.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.
  • Preparing construction sites by clearing debris, removing hazards, and setting up barriers or signage.
  • Loading and unloading materials such as concrete, tools, and equipment.
  • Digging trenches and excavations for foundations, utilities, or drainage systems.
  • Operating basic hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Assisting skilled workers such as carpenters, equipment operators, pipe layers and concrete finishers.
  • Mixing and pouring concrete or other construction materials.
  • Installing and removing temporary structures such as scaffolding, fencing, and forms.
  • Directing traffic around construction zones when required.
  • Moving materials and equipment throughout the job site manually or using wheelbarrows, forklifts, or other equipment.
  • Assisting with site grading and landscaping activities.
  • Conducting basic maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Construction Laborer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Constant ability to walk at a normal pace, on various walking surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, dirt and stone.
  • Frequent ability to stoop, bend, and crouch.
  • Frequent physical dexterity to use hand tools, such as a hand shovel or wheelbarrow; consisting of pushing/pulling and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to use steps and handle/grab bard to access and egress heavy mobile equipment.
  • Frequent vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).

  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Construction Laborer will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • Work is performed outdoors, in various weather conditions; typically excluding below freezing temperatures.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, commonly found in road construction.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as, grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.
