Landfill Worker
JOB TITLE: Landfill Worker
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Landfill
SUPERVISOR: Landfill Supervisor, Landfill Manager
SALARY: $38,336 to $53,670 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Perform a variety of labor services in support of the daily landfill operations, including litter control, facility maintenance, equipment cleaning, traffic control, and general site upkeep. Assist in maintaining safe, clean, and efficient landfill operations.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain the landfill surrounding areas free of litter and debris.
  • Clean landfill equipment, including pressure washing undercarriages, and removing debris from tracks, rollers, and other components.
  • Install, repair, and maintain traffic signs, litter fences, silt fences, barbed wire fencing, and netting systems.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of stormwater pollution prevention and erosion control systems, as directed by the supervisor or manager.
  • Clean and organize landfill facilities, including administrative offices, break rooms, restrooms, equipment buildings, and staging areas.
  • Perform all assigned duties in accordance with City of Cheyenne safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Complete and maintain Daily Equipment Inspection forms for assigned equipment used during the daily operations.
  • Work established rotating schedules during holiday periods

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist heavy equipment operators with operational activities as needed
  • Mow, trim, and maintain grass and landscaped areas around landfill facilities.
  • Direct vehicle traffic as needed to ensure the safety of customers, contractors, and work crews.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, scale house ramps, entrances, and operational areas.
  • Assist the Scale House Attendant with customer processing, load inspections, and traffic flow activities.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Landfill Supervisor or Landfill Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of landfill operations and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous waste and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and ability to follow standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, climbing, and prolonged standing or walking.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED

Preferred:
  • Experience in construction site environment and entry-level clerical/computer skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Wear the designated PPE when required, including a hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe 6-inch lace-up boots, safety glasses, and gloves. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, including the ability to safely climb in and out of equipment cabs, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time, and lifting 50 pounds with proper technique. Maintain mental ability to make sound decisions.
Working Environment:
Landfill/construction site environment; potential exposure to dust, smoke, fumes, gases, noise, infectious materials, odors, waste, and potentially toxic materials. Work in inclement and severe weather conditions; work in proximity of heavy construction equipment; work rotating schedules during holiday periods.
