Job description

Position Summary This entry level position is responsible for inspecting incoming waste and directing customers to the appropriate disposal locations. This position works outdoors in all weather conditions and follows defined procedures and schedules. The employee may be temporarily reassigned duties within the department where additional support is necessary.

The position reports to the Supervisor, Landfill and requires reliability, dependability, and accountability in all aspects of the defined role. Essential Functions & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Inspects and identifies incoming waste and manages unauthorized waste at the facility. Directs customers to the appropriate disposal locations.

Performs landfill maintenance and traffic direction at landfill sites. Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and construction of landfill sites, including, pipe work, rip rap, concrete, litter control, painting, general facility maintenance. Performs tasks involving the use of shovels, rakes, pitchforks, and other various hand tools.

Operates a pick-up truck to drive to different work locations to perform drop offs and pick-ups. Performs related work as required. Assisting in the direction/instruction of temporary day labor personnel.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Basic knowledge and skills in the use of tools, equipment, and materials used in general maintenance work.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Sufficient physical strength and agility to assist to perform manual labor Ability to operate a pick-up truck to drive to different work locations to perform drop offs and pick-ups. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions while standing for long periods of time.

Ability to work under limited supervision and maintain self-motivation. Ability to understand English language sufficiently to converse with the general public/customers, to respond to official inquires, and to make entries on reports and records. Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses The ideal candidate possesses the education and experience listed below.

Minimum eight (8th) grade education. Experience performing laboring work outdoors under unfavorable conditions. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid Florida driver's license required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job and the employee will encounter while performing the duties. This is a manual position that consistently requires standing, walking; sitting; talking; hearing; the use of hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision. The duties of this position are consistently performed outdoors where the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, wet and humid conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, and high, precarious places to odors, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise levels.

The employee is rarely exposed to electric shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, explosives, or radiation in the work environment.
