POSITION TITLE: 21st Century Public Safety Academy Instructor
LOCATION: Olathe Public School's 21st Century Public Safety Academy program
HOURS OF WORK: 8 Hours Daily
STATUS: Certified - Contract
POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for implementing, organizing, and planning an appropriate instructional program for a classroom.
This position is expected to encourage and guide student's intellectual development by combining the instructors unique pedagogical and professional experiences with the program of study.
This position is part of the Certified team and Building principal.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The Police Resource Instructor's duties include identifying, developing, and delivering instruction in the Olathe High School's 21st Century Public Safety Academy program. The coursework of instruction will include, but not limited to, an Introduction to Public Safety, Law Enforcement level 1, Law Enforcement level 2, and mentoring a Public Safety Senior Capstone project. The instructor should be well versed in or have the capacity to learn teaching methods that resonate with various learning styles, provide informal counseling, and act as a communications liaison between law enforcement and the Olathe School District. The instructor should possess and maintain the proper level of fitness required to meet the physical demands of this position.
  • Facilitates learning activities so that students learn the principles, theory, skills, and work ethic necessary to become proficient for entry level positions.
  • Develop and execute lesson plans that lead toward student mastery of program competencies in the Health Science CTE Pathway.
  • Develop and update curriculum as needed.
  • Prepare orders for the purchase of supplies, instruments, equipment, and instructional materials necessary to support the learning activities of the program.
  • Maintain inventory and repair records and ensure the safe and proper operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Create a positive learning environment.
  • Monitor, assess, and advise learners on technical and academic progress and performance.
  • Remain informed of new trends, methods, materials, instruments, and equipment in the health science industry.
  • Actively participate in all professional development activities as required by the school district.
  • Integrate Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) leadership activities into the academy.
  • Use current academic and industry practices in assigned courses of instruction.
  • Develop and upgrade lesson material, training aids and maintains equipment within assigned course of instruction.
  • Assist in the recruitment and placement of learners.
  • Attend technical update classes annually to maintain certifications as needed
  • Analyze and interpret test data
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds while using safe lifting techniques
  • Work with district CTE Coordinator to accurately report state and federal reporting requirements
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of law enforcement experience by August 1st, 2026.
  • Must meet and maintain all requirements for instruction per the Kansas State Department of Education.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

PROCEDURE
  • Selections will be made by an Olathe School District representative, the School Resource Officer Sergeants and the Special Operations Commander with the approval of the Chief of Police.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to identify areas of improvement and opportunity and follow-up to obtain results.
