Job description

Texas Health Action (THA) is a community-informed non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to culturally affirming, quality health services in a safe and supportive environment, with expertise in serving LGBTQIA+ people and those impacted by HIV. Kind Clinic proudly serves Texas with four vibrant locations: two in Austin, one in San Antonio, and another in Dallas plus virtual care services available to all residents across Texas. Texas Health Action is seeking a Health Information Systems Specialist who will provide technical expertise in the administration, maintenance, and optimization for our health information systems. This role involves managing electronic health records (EHRs), administering user accounts, ensuring interoperability of clinical applications, troubleshooting issues, optimizing system performance, and collaborating with clinical staff to deliver high-quality patient care. The specialist will also support data reporting for both clinical and operational needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in health information systems, excellent problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of data security and compliance. This role reports to the Health Information Manager.

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Texas. While the position offers a primarily remote work arrangement, employees must reside in Texas or be willing to relocate to Texas prior to their start date. Regular travel to Texas Health Action locations and periodic in-person work at our Austin administrative headquarters are required based on operational needs.

Core Functions:  

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for users on health information systems. Provide technical assistance to resolve application issues, minimize downtime, and respond to service requests efficiently.
  • Monitor application performance, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with vendors as needed.
  • Maintain and optimize applications, including EHRs and related applications.
  • Administer user accounts for applications, including creating, modifying, and deactivating accounts.
  • Establish strong application practices adhering to best practices and regulatory standards, such as utilizing access controls, encrypting data, and conducting regular vulnerability checks
  • Extract and analyze data for reporting purposes. 
  • Work alongside clinical staff to enhance application utilization. 
  • Conduct regular audits of user access to ensure compliance with HIPAA and security protocols.
  • Ensure the integrity and proper configuration of applications while maintaining effectiveness and usability.
  • Partner with clinical teams to understand workflows, identify application needs, and implement process improvements.
  • Gather user requirements and feedback for new application functionality, enhancements, and system improvements.
  • Support testing and validation of new features, system updates, and application changes.
  • Provide training and education to staff on healthcare applications, new features, and system updates
  • Triage and prioritize application support requests based on urgency and operational or patient-care impact.
  • Identify recurring issues, recommend system or process improvements, and document troubleshooting steps and resolutions.
  • Escalate critical or complex issues to appropriate internal teams, leadership, or vendors when necessary.
Compensation:

Based on the responsibilities and requirements of this position, the starting base salary of $74657 annually. The actual starting rate will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications and relevant experience.

Requirements

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Healthcare, or related field. 
  • Minimum one year of experience providing technical support for clinical applications. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.    
  • Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) applications and health information technologies
  • In-depth knowledge of HIPAA regulations, coding standards (ICD, CPT, etc.), and healthcare privacy practices.
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., PowerBI). 
  • Preferred: 
    • Three or more years of experience providing technical support for clinical applications. 
    • Advanced proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., PowerBI). 
    • Experience with project management or process improvement initiatives. 
    • RHIA or RHIT certification.
    • Experience with LGBTQIA+ and/or other marginalized communities a strong plus.
    • Experience in delivering in-person and virtual training sessions using engaging and interactive methods.
  • Skills 
    • Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new applications quickly.
