Job Description
CDM Smith is seeking an entry-level graduate to join our Geotechnical Engineering team in Fairfax! Under direct supervision, supports geotechnical engineering work on a variety of civil infrastructure, geo-environmental, mining, dams, and levees projects. Performs engineering analyses and prepares design support documentation to meet project requirements and applicable standards. Reviews project data, specifications, calculations, and submittals for consistency with federal, state, and local requirements, as applicable. Ensures that firm policies, procedures, and quality practices are followed for assigned work. Supports geotechnical, hydrological, and geophysical site investigations, including review and reduction of field and laboratory data. Assists with performing geotechnical analyses, modeling, and engineering calculations under senior technical review. Provides construction support and field oversight, including documenting field observations, maintaining accurate field logs and records, tracking relevant construction activities, and communicating field conditions to the project team. Contributes to the firm's technical knowledge management through preparation of calculation packages, technical memoranda, and design documentation for new or special-case studies. Assists with preparation of technical papers, journal articles, conference presentations, posters, and other technical materials.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining or Geologic Engineering or related discipline. 0 years. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Driving Requirements
An appropriate and valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Candidates preferred, can be brought in one level higher depending on education and experience.Up to 2 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience is preferred. EIT certification is preferred.
Skills & Abilities
Strong academic knowledge of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering principles, including slope stability, seepage and groundwater flow, rock mechanics, shallow and deep foundations, excavation support systems and retaining structures, settlement, and ground improvement. Familiarity with geotechnical engineering software, modeling tools, and data reduction methods. Familiarity with AutoCAD/Civil 3D and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to support and perform field investigations with limited supervision, including documenting field observations, maintaining accurate field records, and coordinating with field staff and subcontractors. Ability to review, reduce, and interpret field and laboratory data, engineering drawings, and technical specifications. Ability to take on increasing technical work effectively under senior technical review. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
