How much do entry level geospatial data engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for entry level geospatial data engineer in the United States is $46.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35.82 and $57.69 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can I get a data engineer job with no experience?

Entry level geospatial data engineer positions typically require some knowledge of GIS tools, programming languages like Python or SQL, and data management skills. While prior experience is often preferred, candidates with relevant coursework, certifications, or strong technical skills can sometimes qualify for entry-level roles and demonstrate their potential through projects or internships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Geospatial Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Geospatial Data Engineer, a solid understanding of GIS concepts, spatial data analysis, and a relevant degree in geography, computer science, or a related field is essential. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, Python, and SQL, as well as experience with geospatial databases, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help individuals excel in collaborating with teams and interpreting complex data. These skills ensure accurate geospatial solutions and support critical decision-making in industries like urban planning, environmental management, and logistics.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most entry-level geospatial data engineers do not earn that amount, senior or specialized engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in GIS software, programming, and data management can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries or senior leadership roles. Such compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or other incentives.

Will GIS be overtaken by AI?

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and AI are complementary technologies; AI can enhance geospatial data analysis and automate tasks within GIS workflows. Entry-level geospatial data engineers often use AI tools like machine learning algorithms to improve data processing, but GIS skills remain essential for spatial data management and interpretation. AI is expected to augment rather than replace traditional GIS roles in the near future.

What are entry level geospatial data engineers?

Entry level geospatial data engineers are professionals who work with geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data to collect, process, and analyze location-based information. They use programming, data management tools, and mapping software to support projects in fields such as urban planning, environmental science, and logistics. At the entry level, these engineers assist in database maintenance, data cleaning, and creating visualizations while learning industry standards and best practices.

Is GIS analyst entry-level?

GIS analyst roles can be entry-level or require more experience, depending on the employer. Entry-level GIS analysts typically have a bachelor's degree in geography, GIS, or related fields and may use tools like ArcGIS or QGIS. These positions often involve basic data management, mapping, and spatial analysis tasks.

What is the difference between Entry Level Geospatial Data Engineer vs GIS Analyst?

Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Entry Level Geospatial Data Engineers focus on building and managing spatial data systems, often involving programming and database skills. GIS Analysts primarily analyze and visualize spatial data to support decision-making. While both roles require GIS knowledge, Data Engineers emphasize data infrastructure, whereas Analysts focus on spatial analysis and reporting.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level geospatial data engineers when working with large spatial datasets?

Entry level geospatial data engineers often encounter challenges related to the size and complexity of spatial datasets, such as slow processing times, data quality issues, and difficulties with data integration from various sources. Learning to use specialized tools like GIS software and spatial databases efficiently is crucial for handling these challenges. Collaborating with more experienced engineers and data scientists can help new hires develop best practices for data cleaning, transformation, and visualization, which are key skills in this role.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
SOFTWARE ENGINEER, GEOSPATIAL DATA (STARSHIELD)
Starshield leverages SpaceX's Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts. While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads.
The Starshield data team is building highly reliable processing systems for earth observation data captured by Starshield satellites. We're building mission critical models and data processing software in service of constellation efficiency and derived information quality. We're building for national security. Aerospace experience is not required to be successful here-- we want our engineers to bring fresh ideas from all areas. We look for engineers who love solving problems and seek to make an impact on an inspiring mission. As we expand this team, we're looking for versatile, motivated, and collaborative engineers.
Our team is involved in designing the space information systems at every phase of development. We build tools that enable us to work more efficiently, and that help us build software systems that are secure, reliable, and autonomous. Our machine learning engineers are responsible for the life cycle of the software they create, including development, testing, and operational support.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop novel geospatial data processing models to extract information from raw and partially processed sensor data
  • Create highly reliable software and machine learning systems that task remote sensor payloads on hundreds of satellites in low earth orbit and process the collected information
  • See your modeling work and software through from start-to-finish: from figuring out the core needs to prototyping, developing, and testing; to production rollout and beyond

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or scientific discipline; OR 2+ years of professional experience in software development in lieu of a degree
  • 1+ years of experience in applied machine learning engineering, full stack development, and data science
  • 1+ years of development experience in C, C++, or Python experience

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience applying modern computer vision algorithms at scale
  • Experience with software that has been used in real-world applications and projects
  • Experience with AWS or building inside of cloud environments
  • Experience with developing within Linux server environments, SSH, scripting, and configuration
  • Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration frameworks
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or implementing highly performant databases
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret or Top Secret SCI clearance

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position requires successfully obtaining and maintaining a Top Secret Security Clearance as a condition of employment. While the clearance may not be immediately necessary upon hire, we encourage you to initiate the application process promptly upon accepting this offer. Your ability to secure the necessary clearance is essential for fulfilling key responsibilities of the role. Should you be unable to obtain it, SpaceX reserves the right to modify or terminate your employment to align with operational needs
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay Range:
Software Engineer/Level I: $125,000.00 - $145,000.00/per year
Software Engineer/Level II: $145,000.00 - $175,000.00/per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees accrue paid sick leave pursuant to Company policy which satisfies or exceeds the accrual, carryover, and use requirements of the law.
