Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, laboratoriesClinics, hospitals, private practices
Industry UsageHealthcare teams supporting genetic testing and patient careProviding genetic risk assessment and counseling

Entry Level Genetics Nurses and Genetic Counselors both work in healthcare settings involving genetics. While nurses focus on patient care and support, genetic counselors specialize in risk assessment and counseling. The main difference lies in their education, certification, and specific roles within the genetic healthcare field.

How to get into genetics as a nurse?

To become an entry-level genetics nurse, you should first obtain a nursing license by completing an accredited nursing program and passing the NCLEX exam. Gaining experience in genetics-related areas, such as genetic counseling or laboratory settings, and pursuing additional certifications like the Certified Genetic Nurse (CGN) credential can enhance your qualifications. Developing knowledge of genetic testing, counseling skills, and staying updated on advances in genetics are also important for this specialized role.
