Job description

York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming, and enabling next- generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specializing in end-to-end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms. York's complete Space Segment Solution includes spacecraft production, payload integration, system integration & test, launch services, ground segment services, and mission operations, enabling customers to leverage York's existing technology solutions to get to orbit rapidly and responsively. We're looking to expand our team across the board.
The Simulation, Integration, and Test (SIT) department plays a pivotal role in ensuring the successful deployment and operation of satellites by supporting Flight Software, Ground Software, Vehicle Test, and Mission Operations.
This is a full stack role with an emphasis on both frontend and backend. Our full stack web applications are operational, user facing products, that needs to be highly reliable. We want someone who wants to be close to their users and iterate with them directly.
This role develops and maintains a full-stack application suite that York's test organization runs on. One is our test execution platform and the entry point for all testing across the organization, used by engineers on the production floor to run mission critical tests on real spacecraft before they ship. Another platform is the test artifact management and visualization application for our system of recording test data, capturing results from CI/CD and the production floor and turning them into the dashboards, metrics, and reports that internal teams and customers depend on. The other platform is our full-stack UI/UX for fault injection, simulation control, and visualization of our spacecraft simulation. Together they cover the full arc of a test: run it, see it, and prove what happened.
We are looking for an experienced engineer to be a key contributor on these platforms, with the opportunity to grow into broader ownership over time.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and extend backend services for mission critical test execution, including data modeling and query optimization
  • Build and maintain user facing interfaces, including real time views into running tests
  • Integrate products with lab, ground, and test infrastructure owned by other teams across the company
  • Work directly with test engineers on the floor to gather feedback, understand how tests actually get run, and iterate on the platform based on what you learn
  • Translate high level designs and requirements into high quality, production ready code across the stack
  • Develop automated tests for our products and the systems it interfaces with
  • Support test like you fly, test driven development for spacecraft flight software, ground software, and space vehicle integration
  • Write and execute test plans, procedures, and reports in collaboration with other York developers
  • Triage and fix bugs across a TypeScript monorepo: a Node (Hono) API server with Postgres persistence, a React frontend, and a Kafka/NATS ingest path.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines
  • Troubleshoot and debug full stack products and its supporting tools and infrastructure
  • Provide technical direction to more junior engineers, and create documentation and user guides
  • Communicate complex technical topics to non-technical audiences

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or greater in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong full stack fundamentals, with backend development as the primary strength
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Python
  • Demonstrated proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript and React or equivalent
  • Experience designing and building REST APIs
  • Experience with relational databases, data modeling, and query optimization (we use PostgreSQL)
  • Experience integrating with systems and APIs owned by other teams or third parties
  • Experience shipping user facing features, gathering feedback, and iterating quickly
  • Experience supporting a production application with an active user base
  • Experience with Docker, Docker Compose, and containerization
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Proficiency in a Linux environment, including bash scripting
  • Ownership of the full software development lifecycle: planning, execution, code review, and release, using Git and modern Agile practices

Preferred Qualifications
  • Domain experience with procedure execution, workflow engines, MES, or laboratory/test software
  • Experience migrating users off a commercial off the shelf tools
  • Experience with real time interfaces (WebSockets, telemetry or event streaming)
  • Experience working alongside hardware, in a lab, or in a test floor environment
  • Experience with agentic or AI assisted software development workflows
  • Experience deploying to air gapped or restricted network environments
  • Experience with end to end, system level automated testing
  • Experience with Software in the Loop (SITL) and/or Hardware in the Loop (HITL) test systems
  • Experience with embedded systems, networking, and pub/sub message middlewares
  • Interest in 3D graphics or mapping (three.js, deck.gl, WebGL, MapLibre)
  • Experience with C++
  • Proficiency with GitLab and its CI/CD tooling
  • Self starter with the ability to pick up new concepts quickly
  • Ability to obtain a Security Clearance (Secret or above)
