Job description

Accountant I, Work Order Accountant

Location: Fergus Falls, MN

Salary grade 7

Otter Tail Power Company is seeking an analytical and detail-oriented Accountant I, Work Order Accountant to join our Accounting team. In this role, you'll help ensure the Company's investments in utility infrastructure are accurately accounted for and reported. Working closely with teams across engineering, operations, customer service, and accounting, you'll support capital construction projects from project setup through capitalization and plant-in-service reporting.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to build expertise in fixed asset accounting, capital project accounting, utility accounting, and reporting.

This position will report to the Manager, Property Accounting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the accounting and reporting of capital construction projects and fixed assets.
  • Review and process construction work orders and assist with project capitalization activities.
  • Analyze project costs, maintain fixed asset records, and support plant-in-service accounting.
  • Perform reconciliations and financial analyses related to capital projects and plant assets.
  • Partner with engineering, operations, project sponsors, and other business areas to support timely and accurate project completion.
  • Assist with process improvements, internal controls, and compliance with accounting and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting processes, and account reconciliations.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.
  • Ability to learn and apply accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal control procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fixed asset accounting, property accounting, capital project accounting, or construction work order accounting.
  • Knowledge of utility accounting and FERC accounting requirements.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, financial analyses, and supporting month-end or year-end close activities.
  • Experience working with cross-functional business partners.
