Job description

Union College invites applications for the tenure-track Donald C.Brate ’45-Stanley G. Peschel ’52 Assistant Professorship inStatistics at the rank of Assistant Professor (appointments with ashortened tenure clock may be considered in exceptional cases forexperienced candidates once a job offer is made), beginningSeptember 1, 2027. Applications received by September 15, 2026 willreceive full consideration.

At Union, institutional expectations and support are balancedbetween teaching and research; candidates should demonstrateexcellence in both areas. The position is open to candidates whowill have a Ph.D. in statistics by September 2027, who have strongteaching credentials in undergraduate statistics, and have a recordof scholarly achievement that suggests a continuing commitment toscholarship in any sub-fields within statistics.

This position will play a key role in our growing Statistics, DataAnalytics, and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics programs.Union currently has established minors in these three programs. Thelong-term goal is to grow these programs to majors. While a strongtheoretical background in statistics is required, candidates whoalso have practical experience in addressing real problems withstatistics, and who can teach practical statistical thinking andanalysis of data for a specific purpose and within a specificcontext, are particularly desired. The teaching load is two coursesper trimester with one course release during the first year.

The successful hire will develop courses in their area of expertisethat may contribute to other programs at Union, especially theinterdisciplinary programs in Data Analytics and Financial &Actuarial Mathematics.

About the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to helpingstudents develop their abilities to reason logically, understandabstract concepts, and solve complex problems, while equipping themwith the skills needed for advanced studies in mathematics. Inaddition to our own programs in mathematics, statistics, andfinancial and actuarial mathematics, our curriculum supports theCollege’s academic offerings in the natural and social sciences,engineering, and interdisciplinary studies. Our department takes great pride in its commitment to excellence inboth teaching and scholarly activity. We particularly welcomeapplications from groups that have been traditionallyunderrepresented in statistics.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is$93,000-$96,000. The wage/salary of the finalist selected forthis role will be set based on a variety of factors, including butnot limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience,education, licenses, specialty and training. The stated hiringrate/range represents the College's good faith and reasonableestimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time ofposting.
