Fiber Engineer II

About the Job

Cityside Fiber is seeking an experienced Fiber Engineer II to join our OSP team. This role is responsible for leading complex fiber optic network projects, mentoring junior engineers, optimizing network performance, and solving technical challenges. Fiber Engineer II plays a key part in expanding reliable connectivity to our communities while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety. Success in this position requires strong technical expertise, leadership ability, project management skills, and the capacity to work independently on complex problems in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and planning of complex fiber optic network installations, including route optimization, capacity planning, and resource allocation
  • Oversee and coordinate fiber deployment projects from initial planning through completion and testing
  • Mentor and train junior Fiber Engineers, providing technical guidance and performance feedback
  • Work with splicers and NOC on advanced fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and termination in accordance with industry standards and company specifications
  • Identify root causes of network issues and develop solutions to minimize service disruptions and improve network reliability
  • Maintain detailed technical documentation of network designs, installations, testing results, testing protocols, and maintenance activities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including construction, operations, and network engineering to coordinate successful fiber deployments
  • Perform network performance analysis and recommend upgrades or optimization strategies
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, industry regulations, and company policies regarding fiber installation and network access
  • Conduct field surveys along public right-of-way and utility easements to validate viable, cost-effective network routes — including aerial attachment assessment, clearance checks, pole inspection, and substructure condition review
  • Document field findings through photographs, hand sketches, and field notes to support accurate engineering design and smooth construction handoff
  • Apply value engineering judgment in the field, considering construction impact, installation efficiency, and long-term maintenance when identifying routes and facility placement
  • Participate in technical training and stay current with emerging fiber optic technologies and industry standards
  • Contribute to a culture of trust, integrity, and collaboration

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree in telecommunications, fiber engineering, or related field required
  • 5+ years of experience in fiber optic installation, network engineering, or related telecommunications field
  • 2+ years in a leadership or mentoring role within a technical environment
  • Advanced technical knowledge of fiber optic systems, splicing techniques, network architecture, and testing methodologies
  • Experience with OSP field data collection, including aerial and underground infrastructure assessment, pole classification, and make-ready evaluation
  • Proficiency with network design software and tools (AutoCAD, optical modeling software, or equivalent)
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to mentor and lead technical teams
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and technical troubleshooting expertise
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel to field sites as needed
  • Willingness to work on-call for emergency network repairs and critical issues
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and lift to 25 lbs. occasionally
  • Industry certifications such as CFOT, CFNT, or equivalent strongly preferred
