The Role

Xos is seeking a Vehicle Controls Software Engineer to help design, develop, and validate control software for our next generation electric vehicle platforms.This role involves defining software requirements, implementing and testing control algorithms, and preparing technical documentation with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and reliability. The position collaborates closely with cross-functional engineering teams to gather subsystem requirements and translate them into robust, production-ready control strategies. The Vehicle Controls Software Engineer plays an integral role in both the design and testing phase of development and regularly travels to Xos manufacturing facilities and customer sites to support vehicle commissioning, system testing, and on-site troubleshooting.

**This is an on-site based role at our Los Angeles, CA HQ**

What You'll Do

  • Define, interpret, and refine vehicle control system requirements, ensuring alignment with performance, safety, and compliance goals.
  • Design, implement, and integrate embedded control algorithms for electric powertrain and vehicle systems using model-based development tools (MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow).
  • Develop and execute system-level tests on HIL benches, simulators, and actual vehicles to validate control logic, and software performance.
  • Support vehicle commissioning, end-of-line testing, and troubleshooting activities at Xos manufacturing facilities and customer locations, including diagnostics and root cause analysis.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for control software design, implementation, and testing to meet internal standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and assess the impact of software changes, participating in design and requirement reviews to ensure system-level consistency and reliability.
  • Support change control, version control, and requirements traceability in accordance with internal processes.
  • Provide technical feedback to support improvement tools, procedures, and software development standards.
  • Additional duties and special projects as assigned.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience developing and validating vehicle-level control systems.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for real-time embedded control design.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ programming and automotive communication protocols (CAN,LIN, J1939)
  • Hands-on experience with HIL systems, diagnostic tools (ETAS INCA, Vector CANalyzer), and vehicle testing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset.
  • Experience in fast-paced environments, with the ability to work independently and cross-functionally.
  • A valid Driver's License and a clean driving record are required for this position, as driving is an essential function of the role.
  • Ability to travel as required to support vehicle commissioning and field activities; position requires up to 60% travel

Preferred

  • Experience in electric vehicle systems and architecture.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262 functional safety standards

The salary range for this role is specific to the locations listed below and is the range Xos Inc. reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skillset, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, geographic location, and other business or organizational factors. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.

  • California (Los Angeles Metropolitan): $85,000 - $105,000 annual base salary
