What does an entry level elder law attorney do?

An entry level elder law attorney assists older adults and their families with legal issues related to aging, such as estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, guardianship, and long-term care planning. They help clients navigate complex regulations to protect assets and ensure access to necessary care. These attorneys may also advocate for the rights of seniors and address issues like elder abuse and financial exploitation. With guidance from more experienced attorneys, they gain practical experience in both legal research and client counseling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level elder law attorney?

To thrive as an Entry Level Elder Law Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and foundational knowledge of elder law topics such as estate planning, Medicaid, and guardianship. Familiarity with legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) and document management systems is commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and empathy help you effectively counsel elderly clients and their families. These abilities are crucial for providing accurate legal advice, building trust, and navigating the sensitive issues inherent in elder law.

What are some typical responsibilities for an entry level elder law attorney in their first year?

As an entry level elder law attorney, you can expect to spend much of your first year assisting with matters such as drafting wills, preparing powers of attorney, and supporting more senior attorneys during client meetings. You'll likely be responsible for conducting legal research, managing case files, and communicating with clients and their families about estate planning, Medicaid eligibility, and guardianship issues. Collaboration with paralegals, social workers, and financial planners is common, and you'll learn to navigate the sensitive nature of elder law cases while developing your legal expertise.
