What does a typical day look like for someone in an Entry Level Devops role?

A typical day for an Entry Level Devops professional often includes monitoring infrastructure, managing deployments, and automating routine tasks under the guidance of more experienced team members. You'll collaborate closely with software developers and IT operations staff to ensure systems run smoothly and resolve any basic technical issues as they arise. Many tasks involve using tools to manage code repositories, update documentation, and contribute to continuous integration pipelines. Over time, you may be given more complex projects, which helps accelerate learning and professional growth within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Entry Level Devops position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Devops, you need a foundational understanding of Linux systems, basic scripting (such as Bash or Python), and experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitHub Actions), version control (Git), and infrastructure as code (Terraform or Ansible) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication will help you collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. These capabilities are vital for efficiently supporting automated deployments, troubleshooting issues, and enabling seamless software delivery processes.

Is DevOps an entry level job?

DevOps is typically considered an intermediate to advanced role that requires experience with automation, scripting, and tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. Entry-level DevOps positions may exist but often require foundational knowledge in software development and system administration, along with relevant certifications or training. Most employers expect candidates to have some prior experience or technical skills before stepping into a DevOps role.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps professionals continue to be in demand as AI tools automate certain tasks but do not replace the need for skills in automation, scripting, and infrastructure management. AI enhances DevOps workflows by improving efficiency, but the role still requires expertise in tools like Jenkins, Docker, and cloud platforms. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies remain essential for entry-level DevOps roles.

Can you get a DevOps job with no experience?

Entry-level DevOps positions often require some knowledge of scripting, automation tools, and cloud platforms, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with limited experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn. Gaining certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or learning tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Jenkins can improve chances. Internships, personal projects, or contributing to open-source can also help build relevant skills for entry-level roles.

Sierra Space team members share a spirit of innovation and collaboration and a belief that we can deliver on the boldest missions in space today. Together with our customers, we aim to safeguard our nation, sustain human presence in space, and secure the freedom of operations in low Earth orbit and beyond.
Our success is measured by the trust of those who rely on what we build and deliver, and our technologies keep the United States and its allies mission-ready throughout space.
We are mission-driven, and together, we are an extraordinary team.
About the Role
The Propulsion Engineer I role involves assisting in the design, development, and evaluation of propulsion systems, subsystems, and components for space vehicles, including launch vehicles, spacecraft, and related technologies. This entry-level position provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience under the guidance of experienced professionals. The role includes working on exciting projects, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and technicians, and contributing to the development of innovative solutions that drive the company's success. In this role, you will assist in the design and development of propulsion systems, subsystems, and components for space vehicles, including launch vehicles, spacecraft, and related technologies. You will help develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope and complexity while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure propulsion designs meet project requirements and standards. Conducting tests and simulations to validate the performance of propulsion systems and components will be a key part of your responsibilities, along with documenting design processes, test results, and modifications for future reference. You will provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance for propulsion systems and components and stay updated with the latest advancements in propulsion engineering, applying new knowledge to ongoing projects. Additionally, you will participate in team meetings, contributing to project planning and progress discussions, and follow instructions from senior engineers while working effectively in a team environment. Clear communication of technical concepts and information, both verbally and in writing, will be essential to ensure collaboration and project success.
About You

  • Basic proficiency in using engineering design software and tools such as CAD, FEA, or CFD.
  • Basic understanding of propulsion system components and their functions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Compensation:
Pay Range:
$70,213.00 - $96,542.50
Your actual base compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness.
