What does an Entry Level Data Acquisition Engineer do?

An Entry Level Data Acquisition Engineer is responsible for setting up, monitoring, and maintaining systems that collect and process data from various sources, such as sensors or equipment. They assist in configuring hardware and software, ensuring accurate data collection, and troubleshooting any technical issues. These engineers often work under supervision and are involved in tasks like data validation, report generation, and supporting senior engineers in larger projects. Their work is essential for ensuring high-quality data is available for analysis and decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Data Acquisition Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Data Acquisition Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or computer engineering, data analysis, and basic programming, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with data acquisition systems such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python, as well as experience with sensors and data loggers, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with teams and troubleshooting systems. These skills are crucial for accurately capturing and interpreting data, ensuring system reliability, and supporting engineering project goals.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level data acquisition engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Entry level data acquisition engineers often face challenges in bridging the gap between technical requirements and the needs of other departments, such as software, hardware, or product teams. Communication can be a hurdle, as you may need to explain complex data processes to colleagues with varying levels of technical understanding. Additionally, managing multiple priorities and adapting to fast-changing project scopes are frequent aspects of the role. However, these challenges also present valuable opportunities to develop problem-solving abilities and collaborative skills early in your career.

What is the difference between Entry Level Data Acquisition Engineer vs Data Analyst?

Company:

The Boeing Company

The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Software Engineer - Data Acquisition .NET, C++ to join our Instrumentation and Data Systems (I&DS) team located in Seattle, Washington. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Test and Evaluation (BT&E) organization.

Join us to build the next generation of data acquisition and processing systems used across Boeing's Lab Test facilities. As a member of the I&DS development team, you will develop and maintain software and hardware platforms for acquiring, processing, storing, and visualizing high-volume sensor and time-series data. The systems you deliver will feed critical test results from wind tunnels, test stands, and other facilities into engineering workflows, enabling datadriven decisions that validate and improve aircraft designs.

You will work on a high autonomy team with end-to-end ownership: design, implement, and ship features from prototype to production; make architectural and technology choices that shape product direction; and engage directly with customers and stakeholders. If you thrive in a technically challenging role with high autonomy and ownership, this is the place to excel!

BT&E is currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Mid-Level and Senior level Real-Time Embedded Software Engineer.

Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with a team of engineers to design, architect, develop, and support real-time data management solutions for storing, streaming, processing, and visualizing high-throughput sensor data

  • Deliver solutions that span the entire software development lifecycle, from design to production, and multiple deployment paradigms including CLI tools, native (Windows), and web applications

  • Interface with data acquisition hardware (transducers, DAQ devices) to pull and process data

  • Design and implement intuitive user experiences for data visualization and analysis

  • Build clean, well-tested APIs and streaming pipelines for high-throughput time-series data

  • Collaborate directly with customers and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions

  • Provide technical leadership through code reviews, mentorship, architecture design, and operational best practices

  • Build and maintain deployment, CI/CD, observability, and database infrastructure

  • Help define team culture, standards, and processes

  • Help define product roadmap and priorities

  • 2+ years of experience working with Real-Time Operating Systems

  • 2+ years of experience with C/C++ software for real-time embedded systems

  • 2+ years of experience with Application Development

  • Experience in experimental data acquisition, instrumentation, and analysis

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 7 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ or C# (or similar)

  • Experience with native application development for Windows (C# and .NET, C++ and Qt, or similar)

  • Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, or similar)

  • Proficient in modern version control systems (Git, GitLab, or similar)

  • Proficient with containerization technologies (Docker or similar)

  • Proficient in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, MATLAB, or other programming languages

  • Experience with data acquisition and processing systems (transducers, control systems, IoT devices, DAQ hardware, or similar)

  • Comfortable developing and operating on Windows and Linux environments

  • Experience with modern testing practices and tools (unit testing, TDD, etc.)

  • Familiar with continuous integration and deployment platforms (GitLab CI, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or similar)
