How Can I Get an Entry-Level Cyber Security Job?
Getting a cyber security job requires, above all, expertise in information technology, most often gained through a degree program in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Additional helpful qualifications include industry certification, of which there are numerous types and levels offered by a wide array of vendors; choosing one close to your cyber security specialty can go a long way to setting yourself ahead of other job seekers. Even for entry-level positions, employers prefer candidates with experience, so you should document any university projects or internships you undertook while a student, highlighting especially any leadership roles. You must have superb technology skills, communications skills, and the ability to manage complex systems across a wide variety of operating environments.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Cyber Security professional, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Entry Level Cyber Security vs Network Security Analyst?
| Aspect | Entry Level Cyber Security | Network Security Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA Security | CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA Security |
| Work Environment | Entry-level roles in IT/security teams, often in various industries | Focus on network infrastructure, often in larger organizations or service providers |
| Job Focus | Basic security principles, threat detection, security tools | Network monitoring, firewall management, intrusion detection |
Entry Level Cyber Security and Network Security Analyst roles share similar certifications and work environments, but the latter specializes in network infrastructure security. Entry level roles provide foundational security knowledge, while Network Security Analysts focus more on network-specific security tasks.

In this role, you'll support day-to-day security operations by identifying, investigating, and helping resolve potential security incidents. Your work will directly contribute to strengthening the organization's overall security posture.
What You'll Do
- Monitor and support daily operations of security tools and technologies, ensuring effective and efficient performance.

- Review system logs, reports, and security events across endpoints, networks, and identity platforms to identify risks and recommend remediation.
- Assist in threat hunting activities and collaborate with internal teams and external SOC partners to respond to potential threats.
- Participate in vulnerability management efforts, including vulnerability assessments, audits, and remediation tracking.
- Maintain and support security documentation, including policies, standards, baselines, procedures, and guidelines.
- Contribute to maintaining secure configuration baselines for systems, applications, and infrastructure.
- Support evaluations of security tools, technologies, and enterprise security architecture initiatives.
- Stay current on cybersecurity trends, emerging threats, and evolving attack methods.
- Assist with employee security awareness training and initiatives to promote a security-first culture.
- Participate in security audits, penetration testing activities, and risk analysis efforts.
