Position Objective

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications to create a hiring list to fill current and future vacancies for the following deputy assignments:
  • Field Deputy (Salary Range $67,357 - $101,035)
  • Security/Recreational Deputy (Salary Range $60,140 - $90,210)
FIELD DEPUTY hiring incentive of $5,000 ($2,500 paid after successful completion of field training and $2,500 paid after 1 year of service).

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office offers a variety of assignments including; Patrol, Recreation Division, Court Security, Tactical Response Team, Negotiations Team, Bomb Team, Drone Team, Dive Team, Investigations, Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division, Internet Crimes Against Children Investigations, Corrections, Dispatch, Employee Mentorship Program, Honor Guard.
Deputies have opportunities to attend numerous career-enhancing trainings, as well as specialized trainings to become department instructors (firearms, taser, use of force, de-escalation). Deputies also attend monthly department trainings.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office offers a generous benefits package including; take-home squads for patrol deputies, on-duty fitness, new fitness center, complete initial equipment issue, yearly uniform allowance, department issued cell phone, Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Life insurance, Deferred compensation, Paid Holidays, Paid Time Off and paid overtime.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The Field Deputy will assist in enforcing the laws of the State of Minnesota and ordinances of Crow Wing County, responding to civil, criminal and emergency calls within Crow Wing County, assisting the public, investigating criminal activity, apprehending and arresting law breakers and performing general patrol activities.
The Security/Recreational Deputy operates and maintains the security screening functions of the Judicial Center; enforces courtroom and courthouse policies and procedures relative to safety, security and orderliness. The Security/Recreational Deputy may also be assigned to perform recreational enforcement to include boat and water, snowmobile and ATVs. Additional duties may include transports and civil process, inmate guarding, event management and other assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in criminal justice or related field OR Associates Degree in any field and completion of the Law Enforcement certificate course.
  • Possess a full time peace officer's license issued by the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board or eligible to be P.O.S.T. licensed. Must attach a copy with application.
  • Valid state issued driver's license. Must attach a copy with application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • In person testing will be required on the day of interview.
  • Must pass a background investigation conducted by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office.
  • Must pass a pre-employment medical physical and psychological evaluation.
  • Must pass a drug test.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Prior in-state law enforcement experience.
  • Prior employment experience in dealing with the public.
  • Knowledge of the geography of Crow Wing County.
  • The ability to communicate fluently in English, both spoken and written.
  • The ability to understand and follow detailed spoken and written instructions.
  • Ability to conduct building searches and respond to calls that may require entering small confined spaces.
  • The ability to proficiently utilize technology such as computers, cell phones, email and other data receiving and sending devices.
  • The ability to competently use department issued handguns, shotguns, rifles, batons, and other law enforcement equipment.
  • The ability to stand on a hard surface for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability and confidence to speak in a public setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to cope with a variety of stressful situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
  • Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to convert investigative notes into clear, concise reports.
  • Knowledge of current law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of criminal law and court decisions and methods of crime prevention and investigation.
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence, laws and court decisions governing the custody of persons and property.
  • Ability to gather and analyze facts.
  • Ability to exhibit mature judgment, imagination, initiative, and problem-solving capability in dealing with a variety of law enforcement situations.
  • General knowledge and experience in the operation of motorized watercraft up to twenty (20) feet in length, ATV's and snowmobiles.

Compensation
The county strives to be a market competitive employer with compensation rates that are externally competitive and internally equitable. Compensation rates are governed by the county pay matrix and applicable labor contract. Information regarding the county pay programs is available in the Human Resource Department.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
PTO benefit accrues at the rate of 21 days per year for the first 3 years for regular full-time staff and is pro-rated for regular part-time staff.
Holidays
The 12 calendar holidays that are observed by Crow Wing County are as follows: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Health Insurance
Regular full-time employees and their dependents are eligible for group health insurance coverage, administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Eligibility begins on the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Regular part-time employees regularly scheduled 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage on a pro-rated basis.
Dental Insurance
Delta dental benefit is available to those participating in a health insurance plan. Calendar year annual maximum of $1000 per person.
Life Insurance
Regular full-time employees shall be provided a term life insurance policy of $50,000. Optional life insurance is available at the employee's expense.
Short-Term Disability
Regular full-time and part-time staff regularly scheduled at least 30 hours per week are eligible for short-term disability following 6 months of qualifying employment. Short-term disability payments begin on the first day following 14 consecutive calendar days of absence attributable to a qualifying disability. The plan provides income replacement of up to 50% of regular pay subject to a maximum limit of $1,000 per week.
Long-Term Disability
Regular full-time and part-time staff regularly scheduled at least 30 hours per week are eligible. Long term disability pays 50% of salary up to a maximum of $4,000 per month beginning on day 91 of total disability. The maximum benefits duration is up to the social security normal retirement date.
