JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
DEPARTMENT: Respiratory Therapy Department
STATUS: Exempt/Non-Exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides respiratory therapy and other appropriate clinical interventions to assist with orthopedic and non-orthopedic patient's needs.
PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS:

3. Responsible for the safe and effective administration of respiratory therapy and other clinical
functions:
  1. Responsible for the following clinical Interventions
    • Patient Assessment and Evaluation inpatient/outpatient
    • Hand-held Nebulizer Therapy
    • Aeroneb Solo Administration
    • Aerosolized Tobramycin Administration
    • Aerosol Therapy
    • Arterial Blood Gas Collection
    • Ventilator set-up & Management
    • Familiar with Bulk Gas Systems

Mechanical Ventilation in the ICU
    • LTV series ventilator
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Bronchoscopy set-up and assist
    • Home Care Services and Overnight Oximetry
    • CPAP set-up.
    • LMA insertion
    • Intubation assists
    • Noninvasive Therapy and Modalities
    • PEP Therapy
    • Noninvasive ventilation with V-60 and ResMed Lumis
    • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) evaluation in PASU
    • Oxygen Delivery devices
    • Portable Oxygen E Integrated Valve Center
    • Sputum specimen collection with Hypertonic Saline
    • Sputum Specimen via Mechanical Ventilator
    • Vibratory Positive Expiratory Pressure Therapy Device
    • Bedside Pulmonary Function Testing
    • Emergency Oxygen Shutoff
    • High Flow System Administration

  1. Collaborates effectively with Health Care Team.

  1. Utilizes Clinical resources appropriately.

  1. Accurately and completely bill for chargeable services, documents assessments, clinical observations, and intervention in patient record according to department policy.

  1. Maintains proper airway management

4. Education:
  1. Attends and provides input at staff meetings.

  1. Participates in in-service education and orientation.

  1. Maintains BLS/ACLS Certification. Maintains Professional Licensure

5. Communication
  1. Effectively reports sign -off to oncoming shift.

  1. Demonstrates effective communication with health care team by:
  • Accurately reporting clinical status.
  • Actively working to resolve patient issues/problems.
  • Ambassador for patient rights and advocate for patient care.

  1. Reconciles patients requiring Respiratory Therapy services, ensuring that all orders and treatments are included in Census assignment and are accurate.

6. Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Responsible for initiating charges for patient services provided.

  1. Assists with maintaining medical gas cylinder inventory par levels and satellite storage inventory.

  1. Oxygen rounds at Night

  1. Coordinator of OSA Program and study projects, Involved in BLS/ACLS Edu.

  1. Cleans non-disposable respiratory equipment after patient use.

  1. Maintains a professional appearance and appropriate professional demeanor at all times with clinical staff.

  1. Meets patient's goal and needs and provides quality care by conducting pulmonary function test; determining respiratory treatment plans in consultation with physician and physician orders.

  1. Demonstrates proficient competency in the operation of applicable Hospital computer systems.

  1. Administers respiratory therapy treatments, assist with breathing exercises, monitoring physiological response to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gas and blood chemistry changes.

  1. Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications

  1. Completes Home Oxygen discharge planning by consulting with physician, nurses, social worker, and other health care workers; contributing to patient care experience.

  1. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.

  1. Functions as a member of the code team.

  1. Provides in-service education to clinical staff within the scope of a respiratory therapist clinical practical guidelines

e. Maintains RRT credential by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
f. Maintains Current Massachusetts License as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
(RRT)
Attends all staff meeting or, if unable, accepts responsibility for reading and signing
Staff meeting minutes.
h. Demonstrates knowledge of patient's clinical needs and contacts appropriate
Personnel to meet identified needs as documented by problem reporting and QI
System.
I. Follows established hospital infection control and all safety procedures accordingly.
7. Plans time away from work appropriately
  1. Arrives and leaves at designated times.

  1. Uses unplanned earned time appropriately (Based on full time hours. Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours).

8. Performs other duties as needed and required.
9. Yearly Annual Safety Review.
Education: Must have completed a two-year AMA approved program (AS C ) in respiratory care.
Associates of Science Degree (AS) Required
Bachelors of Science Degree (BS) Preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  1. Minimum Formal Education: Graduate of approved Respiratory Therapy Program or equivalent.
  2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology required
  3. Previous Experience: Five years acute clinical experience preferably from a tertiary Institution.
  4. Attains BLS & ACLS recertification as required.
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pulmonary Physics, Pulmonary Pathology, Advanced Respiratory Care, Blood Gas Chemistry, and Pharmacology at a level generally acquired through completion of a two-year AMA approved Program in Respiratory Therapy.
  6. Knowledgeable in all modes of Ventilator Management and noninvasive therapy
  7. Knowledgeable in the assessment of patients who acutely have a change in status.
  8. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
  9. Must have the physical ability to meet core job requirement in accordance with practice settings and demands for the patient populations regularly served.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: MA license; RRT- Registered Respiratory Therapist
LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: BLS provider, ACLS provider
