What does an entry level control engineer do?

An entry level control engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, development, and implementation of control systems used in manufacturing, industrial processes, or automation. Their tasks often include programming controllers, troubleshooting equipment, collecting and analyzing data, and collaborating with senior engineers on projects. They typically work with PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and other automation hardware to optimize processes and ensure systems operate safely and efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level control engineers when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Entry level control engineers often encounter challenges such as communicating effectively with colleagues from different engineering backgrounds (mechanical, electrical, software) and translating control requirements into actionable tasks. Additionally, understanding system integration and troubleshooting unexpected behaviors in complex automated processes can be demanding. Proactively asking questions, actively participating in meetings, and seeking mentorship within the team are key strategies for overcoming these hurdles and accelerating professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Control Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Control Engineer, you need a solid understanding of control systems, automation principles, and a degree in electrical, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and simulation software like MATLAB or LabVIEW is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel when collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These skills ensure the successful design, implementation, and maintenance of automated processes that meet safety and efficiency standards.

Job Title: QA/QC Engineer

Job Description

The QA/QC Engineer supports quality assurance and quality control activities on a utility-scale solar construction project. This role works closely with field teams, project management, and subcontractors to help ensure electrical installations meet project specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements. The position is ideal for entry-level candidates with a Bachelor’s degree who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in solar construction, electrical systems, and field quality processes.

Responsibilities

  • Support quality inspections of electrical installations, including DC and AC wiring systems, combiner boxes, inverters, switchgear, and grounding and bonding systems.
  • Assist in verifying that construction work aligns with engineering drawings, project specifications, and the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable standards.
  • Help implement inspection and test plans (ITPs) and maintain associated documentation.
  • Participate in pre-installation inspections to confirm readiness and compliance before work begins.
  • Assist with in-process inspections to identify issues early and support adherence to quality and safety standards.
  • Support final acceptance walkdowns by documenting findings and helping confirm installations meet requirements.
  • Track and document non-conformance issues (NCRs) and assist in resolution efforts.
  • Maintain organized quality records, inspection reports, and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with field superintendents, electrical foremen and crews, project managers, and engineers to address quality concerns.
  • Assist with coordination of third-party inspections and client visits.
  • Support commissioning readiness by helping verify system and documentation completion.
  • Contribute to punch list tracking and completion efforts prior to project turnover.
  • Assist with organizing inspection schedules and communicating updates to the team.

Preferred Skills

  • Basic understanding of electrical systems, solar energy systems, or construction practices (through education, internships, or hands-on experience).
  • Familiarity with electrical codes such as the NEC is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and project specifications (or willingness to learn).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented, field-based environment.
  • Willingness to learn QA/QC processes, inspections, and documentation practices.
  • Basic communication skills for reporting and collaborating with team members.
  • Additional Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Internship, coursework, or exposure to construction, solar, or electrical projects is a plus.
  • Interest in renewable energy and utility-scale solar projects.
  • Commitment to safety and following established procedures and best practices.

Work Environment

This role is based onsite at a utility-scale solar farm construction project. The QA/QC Engineer will work in an active field environment, spending time outdoors around construction areas and electrical equipment. The role involves close collaboration with field teams and offers strong learning opportunities in quality processes, electrical systems, and solar construction. Work hours typically align with construction schedules and may require some flexibility.
