Job Purpose

Associate Engineers at National Grid play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our electric transmission and distribution systems. These positions involve developing standards, designing control systems, managing assets, and integrating new technologies. Associate Engineers work across various departments to support construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems, contributing to strategic business objectives and regulatory compliance.

Key Accountabilities

Substation

  • Perform preliminary engineering evaluations, develop project scope and schedule to support business strategy and capital investments.
  • Perform engineering calculations and studies to support project scope.
  • Lead (assisted) multi-disciplined engineering team, providing support to project manager and project delivery process, to deliver project assignments.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical challenges, investigative findings, and recommended solutions.
  • Interface with internal design staff on construction document development.
  • Review drawings associated with projects, including manufacturers' equipment.
  • Manage (assisted) consultant contracted work, ensuring compliance and technical adequacy against company standards and project scope.
  • Participate in the development of standards and procedures.
  • Support construction and project closeout activities. 

Distribution Planning and Asset Management

  • System Planning & Asset Management: Provide strategic direction for immediate and long-term planning of sub-transmission and distribution systems to enhance resilience and meet capacity requirements.
  • Customer Support: Conduct studies and ensure compliance for customer and distributed generation interconnections, offering technical guidance to customer groups.
  • Reliability Performance: Track and enhance regional distribution and sub-transmission reliability, promoting actions for improvement.
  • Collaboration: Work with various National Grid departments, including Electric Operations, Regional Control Centers and Distribution Design, to support integration of distributed generation, deployment of grid modernization, customer centric solutions and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Process Improvement: Proactively identify and implement changes to enhance performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of engineering processes.
  • Problem Solving: Take responsibility for addressing issues promptly and effectively, while maintaining strong communication with stakeholders
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Plans to obtain Engineer in Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Other Requirements: Valid driver's license.
