Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is seeking a Substation Electrician to support our manufacturing areas in and around Berkeley and Hazelwood, MO.
The Substation Electrician is a skilled, journey-level position that performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in installation, maintenance and repair of a substation. Workers specialize in low, medium, and high-voltage substation work, including switching, equipment maintenance and calibration. Performs skilled work in electrical construction, maintenance, climb station structures, operate aerial lift and troubleshooting of electric utility facilities such as electric transmission, distribution, communication and power monitoring systems.
This position performs at the journey-level skilled in the area of installation, maintenance and repair of substations, circuit breakers, transformers, and primary switching of feeder lines. Specializes in low, medium, and high-voltage in a substation and provides training to apprentices, and other employees as assigned. Participates in policy and standards development and related work as required. Works closely with engineering teams on all maintenance and CIP projects. Positions in the class of Electrical Substation Worker are generally filled by advancement from Apprentice Electrical Substation class as vacancies occur.
Position Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair simple and complex protective relays, regulator control and operating devices, power transformer protective and safety devices and maintain appropriate records for calibration, testing and maintenance.
  • Install, test, maintain and repair 4160V,12kV and 34kV power circuit breakers; perform periodic trip testing.
  • Maintain, test and repair, 115V, 4kV,12kV, 34kV power transformers and ATS systems
  • Sample, test and evaluate insulating oil and other media and maintain appropriate records including DGA and dielectric test.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, maintain and calibrate computer-based SCADA system, transducers, input devices, communication equipment and data transmission equipment.
  • Perform substation high-voltage switching operations.
  • Test, calibrate, maintain and repair distribution system line equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, ATS systems , high speed ground systems and associated control equipment.
  • Test prior to energizing and perform fault locating of high-voltage underground cable systems
  • Assists with the design, programing, installation, maintenance of PLC functions.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs electric control/protection systems both AC and, PLC's, .
  • Perform infrared scanning of substations transmission/distribution equipment

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General fundamentals of electrical theory, control relaying, protection relaying, control and power switching schemes.
  • Knowledge of power distribution substations SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of and background in digital solid state equipment and circuits.
  • Ability to communicate with others, make sound decisions, and to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • Understand electrical codes including NFPA 70E, OSHA Regulations and other codes as applicable.
  • Ability to use bench test equipment TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio), Megger, AC/DC Hipot, multimeters and analyzers and other tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Safe work practices and procedures including high voltage switching procedures.
  • Maintenance and operation of substation, controls, power flow, protection.
  • Safety requirements and precautions necessary while working with low medium and high voltage systems.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Effectively organize information and data
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting and repair on a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment commonly found in an electric utility.
  • Read, interpret, and update electrical drawings, plans, diagrams and specifications, sketch electrical drawings to reflect as built systems.
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and analyze communication systems; communicate accurately orally and written; possess the ability to read electrical and communication distribution maps.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of work using computer software when necessary.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Travel from site to site; exposure to high voltage and heights; lifting, climbing and stooping.
  • Hazardous conditions are an extremely critical factor of this job, working in close proximity to energized lines and equipment up to 34,500 volts.
  • Work in small, confined areas.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body when lifting heavy electrical equipment during installation, or when climbing in and out of the truck cab or bucket.
  • Move electrical components or fixtures weighing up to 70 pounds short distances.
  • Communicate orally both face to face and using a telephone or radio when receiving or communicating status of work assignments.
  • Sit for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will when working on ground level electrical facilities.

Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. secret clearance Post Start is required
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency
  • Completion of an accredited Trade School or apprenticeship program
  • Experience with solid state circuitry and computer-based test equipment, control, monitoring and analysis system and associated tools required

Additional Information:
  • The selected candidate must be able to work any shift, as assigned.
  • This is an hourly position governed by the IBEW Collective Bargaining agreement.
  • New Hires, as well as employees who transfer from non-union positions, may be required to attend some type of training upon their start. Once any required training has been completed all new employees will be considered on probation for a period of fifteen (15) weeks.

  • Bonus amount: US dollars (USD) $1,500

  • This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense
