Job description

Associate Machine Design Mechanical Engineer

Boeing is seeking a Associate Machine Design Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Berkeley, Missouri. In this role, you will join a team of multi-disciplined engineers and technical professionals responsible for ensuring the successful design, development, manufacture, installation and life cycle support of Automated Ultrasonic Scanning Systems (AUSS) Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) products for worldwide internal and external aerospace programs. The team collaborates with multiple functions, suppliers, Boeing sites, and external customers to provide world class solutions for NDI systems.

Automated inspection of composites and metallics is a critical technological need that supports both production and maintenance of aircraft for Boeing and our industry partners. This position offers an opportunity to join a high visibility team of exceptional engineers and technicians as it expands to meet growing industry demand.

This position will report to the Manager of AUSS in Boeing Global Services Off Platform Support Equipment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Designs and integrates mechanical components for complex automated factory inspection systems, including machine structural pieces, probe mounting/adjustment mechanisms, drive systems (motor, gearboxes, linear bearings), cable handling, water containment, part fixturing and safety systems utilizing variety of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, sheet metal, EDM) and materials (metals, plastics, composites)
  • Ensure designs meet safety standards (functional safety) and regulatory requirements
  • Create, interpret and modify drawings used for manufacture of mechanical machine components
  • Troubleshoots complex electrical-mechanical systems in multi-disciplinary integration environments
  • Routinely travels to customer sites across US and international to support system-level installation, integration, commissioning, debugging, and sustainment activities
  • Solicits and refines process improvements to improve product quality and efficiency
  • Effectively communicates complex technical issues to product team, leadership, and customers
  • Utilizes strong business acumen to represent Boeing and its products to customers
  • Performs efficiently in a fast-paced, challenging, and diverse work environment
  • Travels both domestically and internationally nominally 20% of the time, up to 50% of the time

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace Aeronautical or Material Sciences)
  • 2+ years of experience working in an Engineering environment
  • 2+ years of experience working with Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical data
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally as needed

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Active Security Clearance
  • Experience with Siemens NX
  • Experience analyzing deflection and loads/stress of structures
  • Experience performing Finite element analysis
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Experience designing and integrating mechanical components for machine tools, field support equipment, or automated systems
  • Experience performing system-level integration, testing, commissioning, or troubleshooting of automated equipment or data acquisition systems in lab or factory environments
  • Experience in industrial automation, robotics, or manufacturing systems
  • Experience in Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) or Non-destructive Test (NDT)
