A Day in the Life

As a Toolmaker I at Medtronic, you will help support the reliable production of life-changing medical technologies by building, repairing, and maintaining the precision tooling used in our manufacturing operations.

In this entry-level role, you will work with tooling, fixtures, gauges, jigs, molds, and machine components while developing your technical skills alongside experienced colleagues. You will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Maintenance teams to help ensure tooling meets established safety, quality, and performance standards.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Manufacture, assemble, modify, maintain, and repair tooling, fixtures, jigs, gauges, molds, and machine components.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and CAD models to complete assigned work.
  • Operate manual machine-shop equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to inspect completed work and verify compliance with dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and assist with troubleshooting tooling and production equipment.
  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Maintenance teams to address production needs and support continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Document tooling repairs, modifications, maintenance activities, and inventory accurately.
  • Follow established safety procedures, including lockout/tagout requirements, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Identify tooling concerns and communicate potential quality, safety, or production issues to the appropriate team members.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • No minimum education requirement.
  • No prior experience required.

Nice to Have: Preferred Requirements

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and an interest in developing toolmaking and machining skills.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, safety procedures, and established work practices.
  • Technical school, apprenticeship, or vocational training in tool and die, machining, or a related field.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, or technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with machining practices, tooling materials, or measurement techniques.
  • Exposure to precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and height gauges.
  • Exposure to CNC machining.
  • Experience supporting fixture modifications or tooling improvements.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or 5S principles.
  • Basic computer skills, including experience documenting work or using work-order systems.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
