Job Title: Entry-Level Environmental Engineer

Job Description

This entry-level Environmental Engineer position offers the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of environmental consulting projects based out of Overland Park, KS. The role focuses on civil and environmental services related to landfills, landfill infrastructure, composting, and other projects that involve design, engineering, permitting, construction, and operations support. You will learn quickly, collaborate closely with experienced engineers, and develop professionally while performing both field and office-based work in a dynamic consulting environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, technical reports, and permit applications in support of civil and environmental projects.
  • Follow directions from the Project Manager to meet both client and company expectations, ensuring quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Apply engineering and scientific principles to solve environmental and civil engineering problems under the guidance of a Project Manager.
  • Review plans and assist in coordinating project work, helping to integrate design, permitting, construction, and operational considerations.
  • Perform field work in varied terrain and weather conditions, including surveys and data collection, construction quality assurance, inspections, and related site activities at landfill and composting facilities.
  • Conduct construction quality assurance and field inspections to verify that construction activities comply with design specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete office-based tasks such as CAD drafting, mathematical calculations, report writing, preparation of site plans and facility diagrams, and development of permit applications.
  • Receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and obtain supervisory approval on proposed plans or projects, building your skills and professional judgment.
  • Collaborate with project teams to support design, engineering, permitting, construction, and operations support for landfill, landfill infrastructure, composting, and related environmental projects.
  • Travel approximately 20% of the time, primarily for local site visits and field assignments, with occasional overnight travel as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Competence with MS Office and other computer software commonly used in environmental consulting.
  • Experience or coursework related to civil and environmental engineering, including design, remediation, and environmental engineering principles.
  • Ability to perform data collection, report writing, and field inspections in support of environmental and civil projects.
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record in good standing.
  • Ability and willingness to perform construction quality assurance activities and field inspections at active landfill and related sites.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, documentation, and permit applications.
  • Ability to work effectively under the direction of a Project Manager and as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Progress toward a Professional Engineering license, such as holding an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification, is preferred.
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is a plus.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D design software is ideal.
  • Exposure to or interest in groundwater-related work and environmental remediation projects.
  • Familiarity with HAZWOPER training and requirements is beneficial.
  • Background or interest in geology, civil engineering, or environmental engineering beyond core degree requirements.
  • Demonstrated motivation to learn quickly, embrace teamwork, and develop professionally in an environmental consulting setting.

Work Environment

This role combines significant fieldwork with office-based responsibilities. You will spend approximately 50% to 60% of the year working in the field, primarily on landfill sites and related facilities, performing surveys, data collection, construction quality assurance, and inspections in varied terrain and weather conditions. The remaining 40% to 50% of your time will be spent in an office setting in Overland Park, KS, working in cubicles or shared office spaces alongside other staff, while private offices are reserved for Project Managers and other employees. The position involves regular use of computers and software such as MS Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D, as well as standard engineering and surveying equipment. Travel is expected to be around 20%, typically to local project sites, with occasional overnight trips. The work environment supports collaboration, professional growth, and exposure to a variety of civil and environmental projects, especially those focused on landfills, landfill infrastructure, composting, and associated permitting, design, and construction activities.\

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $33.65/hr.
