What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Computational Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Computational Designer, you need a foundation in design principles, basic programming (such as Python or Grasshopper), and a relevant degree in architecture, engineering, or design. Familiarity with digital modeling tools like Rhino, Autodesk Revit, and parametric design software is typically required. Problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help translate complex design ideas into practical solutions. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative, efficient designs and collaborating successfully in multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level computational designers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level computational designers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new design software, understanding complex algorithms, and effectively communicating technical ideas to non-technical team members. To overcome these hurdles, it's helpful to seek out mentorship within your team, participate in collaborative projects, and invest time in learning industry-standard tools like Grasshopper or Dynamo. Regularly reviewing open-source projects and attending workshops can also build both technical expertise and confidence in problem-solving.

What is entry level computational design?

Entry level computational design refers to roles where individuals use computer-based tools and programming to solve design problems and create innovative solutions, often in fields like architecture, engineering, and product design. These positions typically involve tasks such as creating parametric models, automating repetitive design processes, and assisting with digital fabrication. Entry level professionals often work under supervision, learning industry-standard software like Rhino, Grasshopper, or Dynamo, and developing their skills in both design thinking and technical implementation.

What is the difference between Entry Level Computational Design vs Entry Level Architectural Drafter?

AspectEntry Level Computational DesignEntry Level Architectural Drafter
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Architecture, Design, or related field; knowledge of CAD and scriptingBachelor's in Architecture or Drafting; proficiency in CAD software
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, architecture firms, tech-driven environmentsArchitectural firms, drafting departments
Industry UsageDesign innovation, parametric modeling, computational workflowsCreating technical drawings, construction documents
Common Search IntentDesign automation, parametric modeling jobsDrafting, technical drawing roles

Entry Level Computational Design focuses on using computational tools and scripting to develop innovative design solutions, often involving parametric modeling. In contrast, Entry Level Architectural Drafters primarily produce technical drawings and construction documents. While both roles require knowledge of CAD software, computational design emphasizes programming and algorithmic thinking, making it suitable for tech-savvy candidates interested in design innovation.

We are looking for entry level and experienced design engineers that will participate and lead the following responsibilities:

  • Create and modify CAD models of building systems
  • Perform infrastructure sizing calculations (HVAC ducts, piping, load calculations) utilizing standard tools (i.e. MS Excel) and specialized software (CFD, HAP, Trace CDS)
  • Perform controls design including creating mechanical system sequences of operations, PID diagrams, and points lists
  • Create mechanical system layouts
  • Perform system selection including specifying and selecting equipment
  • Creating schematic diagrams of engineered systems
  • Creating and editing engineering reports for system analyses, field observations, and/or project scope descriptions.
  • Creating and editing equipment and material specifications
  • Provide commissioning services and support
  • Provide construction administration services (submittals, RFIs, field observations, construction meeting attendance)
  • Participate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate mechanical-electrical system design requirements (architecture, structure, electrical, fire protection, civil/site, etc.)
  • Create and maintain filing/tracking systems for projects
  • Perform design reviews for QA/QC to maintain accurate and coordinated work product
  • Assist with proposal creation for future project pursuits
  • Attend client meetings as a company representative
  • Perform site visits for obtaining existing condition information, interacting in client meetings, resolving field issues, participating in Cx process, and reviewing project construction progress
