How much do entry level coal mining engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 1, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level coal mining engineering in the United States is $89,183.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,500.00 and $109,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Will AI replace mining engineers?

AI can assist mining engineers by analyzing data, optimizing operations, and improving safety, but it is unlikely to fully replace the need for human expertise in planning, decision-making, and problem-solving in coal mining engineering. Skilled engineers are essential for interpreting AI outputs and managing complex field conditions. Therefore, AI serves as a tool to enhance, not replace, the role of mining engineers.

How much do coal miners make starting out?

Entry-level coal miners typically earn between $20,000 and $40,000 per year, depending on location, experience, and the specific mining operation. Starting salaries may increase with additional certifications, safety training, and experience working in underground or surface mining environments.

What is the difference between Entry Level Coal Mining Engineering vs Entry Level Mining Engineering?

AspectEntry Level Coal Mining EngineeringEntry Level Mining Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mining Engineering or related field, possibly some certificationsBachelor's in Mining Engineering or related field, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentUnderground and surface coal mines, safety-focused settingsVarious mining sites, including metals, minerals, and coal
Industry UsagePrimarily in coal mining companies and energy sectorBroader, including metals, minerals, and energy industries
Job FocusCoal extraction processes, safety, and environmental complianceGeneral mining operations, site planning, and safety

Entry Level Coal Mining Engineering focuses specifically on coal extraction and safety within coal mines, while Entry Level Mining Engineering covers a broader range of mining activities across various minerals and metals. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but their work environments and industry applications differ slightly.

How to get into mining with no experience?

Entry level coal mining engineering positions often require a high school diploma or equivalent; gaining relevant skills through technical training, certifications, or apprenticeships can improve chances. Prior experience in related fields like construction or heavy equipment operation is beneficial, and understanding safety protocols is essential. Starting as a laborer or assistant can provide industry exposure and opportunities for advancement into engineering roles.

Is mining a good career with no experience?

Entry level coal mining engineering roles typically require some technical knowledge and safety training, but many companies offer on-the-job training for newcomers. Having a high school diploma or equivalent and a willingness to learn safety procedures and equipment operation can help start a career in mining, though some positions may prefer or require technical certifications or related coursework.
