We offer a competitive salary for this role, with an expected range of $55,400 to $70,200. The final offer will depend on your experience, skills, and overall qualifications. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Database Administrator (SQL Server) to join the Data Services team at Bath Iron Works. This role is ideal for someone with foundational knowledge of SQL Server who is eager to grow their skills in database administration, performance management, and operational support.

Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Junior Database Administrator (SQL Server) ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership:
    • Be a safety leader for your team and help foster a culture of operational safety.
    • Ensure all safety training is completed on time.
  • Project Execution:
    • Assist in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Microsoft SQL Server instances.
    • Monitor database performance and optimize and tune processes as required.
    • Participate in regular backup and restore operations to ensure data reliability and availability.
    • Support database security by managing user accounts, permissions, and auditing.
    • Maintain and update documentation including database schemas, processes, and procedures.
    • Participate in patching, upgrades, and basic automation tasks as directed.
  • Training and Development:
    • Take part in training to further working knowledge of new database tools and methodologies.
    • Attend BIW training opportunities as required.
  • Team Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work collaboratively with developers, data engineers, system administrators, and business teams.
    • Communicate effectively across application and data engineering functions.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify and implement database management process improvements and optimizations as required.

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.   

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field.

Required:

  • 2+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server (could be internship, coursework, or entry-level professional experience).
  • Basic understanding of T-SQL, querying, and relational database concepts.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server environments.
  • Ability to diagnose common database issues and willingness to learn more advanced troubleshooting.
  • Strong attention to detail and desire to follow established procedures. 

Preferred:

  • Exposure to SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and related tools.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Azure or other cloud hosting platforms.
  • Basic knowledge of performance tuning concepts and backup/restore strategies.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell and Python.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Azure or SQL Server fundamentals.
