What are Entry Level CAM Programmers?

Entry Level CAM Programmers are professionals who use Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to create programs that guide machines in the manufacturing process, such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced programmers and are responsible for tasks like converting engineering drawings into machine instructions, optimizing tool paths, and ensuring efficient production. Entry level positions usually require knowledge of CAD/CAM software, basic machining concepts, and attention to detail. These roles are ideal for individuals starting their careers in manufacturing technology or engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level CAM Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level CAM Programmer, you need a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, basic CAD/CAM principles, and a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with CAM software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD, and knowledge of CNC machine operations are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you interpret technical drawings and collaborate with engineers and machinists. These skills ensure accurate programming, efficient production workflows, and minimized errors in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level CAM Programmers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level CAM Programmers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex machining processes, interpreting technical drawings, and learning to use specialized CAM software efficiently. To overcome these, new programmers should seek mentorship within their team, actively participate in training sessions, and practice hands-on programming on real or simulated projects. Collaborating with experienced machinists and engineers can also provide valuable insights, helping to bridge knowledge gaps and build confidence in producing accurate and efficient toolpaths.

What is the difference between Entry Level Cam Programmer vs Entry Level CNC Operator?

AspectEntry Level Cam ProgrammerEntry Level CNC Operator
Required CredentialsBasic knowledge of CAM software, technical trainingHigh school diploma, some training in CNC operation
Work EnvironmentDesigning and programming CNC machines, office and shop floorOperating CNC machines, primarily shop floor
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotiveManufacturing, machining shops
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Entry Level Cam Programmers focus on creating and optimizing CNC machine programs using CAM software, often working closely with design teams. Entry Level CNC Operators primarily run and monitor CNC machines based on existing programs. While both roles are entry-level and require some technical training, Cam Programmers need more software knowledge, whereas CNC Operators focus on machine operation and quality control.

Job description

The Associate Automation Engineer is an entry-level role designed to grow the next generation of automation engineering talent. You'll work alongside senior engineers to design, develop, test, and deploy automated manufacturing cells — gaining hands-on experience across controls, robotics, software, and system integration, with increasing ownership as you develop.

What You'll Do
  • Support senior Automation Engineers in the development, build, and commissioning of automated manufacturing cells.
  • Assist with system integration, assembly support, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of automation equipment.
  • Participate in the development, testing, and troubleshooting of control systems, robotics, and automation software.
  • Contribute to programming and debugging across PLCs, robots, and higher-level software systems.
  • Help develop and modify HMIs, control logic, and feedback/control systems.
  • Support robotics integration, including setup, testing, and optimization of robotic cells.
  • Use CAD/CAM tools to support mechanical layouts, cell design concepts, and documentation.
  • Take part in commissioning and deployment activities at manufacturing sites, with occasional travel required.
  • Learn and apply engineering best practices, safety standards, and structured development methodologies under the guidance of experienced mentors.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to automation performance, reliability, and standardization.
What We're Looking For

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Foundational understanding of automation, control systems, and robotics principles.
  • Understanding of PLC programming, industrial networks, and HMI development.
  • Programming experience in one or more of the following: Python, Java, or C# is preferred
  • Working knowledge of control and feedback systems, as well as robotics and automated systems.
  • Exposure to CAD/CAM tools — NX preferred; academic or project experience is welcome.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a genuine eagerness to learn in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
  • Clear, effective communication skills and an analytical mindset.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and support multiple sites with a degree of independence.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% in support of automation builds and deployments.

Nice to Have

  • Internship, co-op, or project experience in automation, manufacturing, or robotics.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation hardware, sensors, and actuators.
  • A passion for advanced manufacturing and factory automation technologies.
