Job Description

The Quality Control Lab Technician performs a full range of laboratory testing to ensure products meet established quality specifications. This role uses advanced analytical instrumentation and wet chemistry techniques to test raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods, while accurately documenting results and supporting continuous quality improvement within a chemical manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to verify compliance with established specifications.
  • Operate and maintain Gas Chromatography (GC) systems to analyze chemical samples according to defined methods.
  • Use High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to perform detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Conduct analyses using UV-Visible spectrophotometers to measure optical absorption and related properties.
  • Perform Infra-red (IR) spectroscopy and FTIR analyses to identify and characterize chemical compounds.
  • Carry out pH analysis, titrations, and other wet chemistry methods to support routine and special testing.
  • Execute residue after evaporation testing, fluorescence testing, viscosity measurements, and other relevant QC analyses.
  • Determine key analytical parameters as required by test methods and specifications.
  • Set up daily standards, perform daily Karl Fischer (KF) calibrations, and prepare special purpose laboratory equipment for testing.
  • Plan and prioritize the sequence of testing for incoming samples to meet turnaround time and production needs.
  • Review, interpret, and summarize analytical data, ensuring results are accurate, reliable, and complete.
  • Record all analytical results using good documentation practices and in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with the QC team and cross-functional teams to share results, raise issues, and support production and quality decisions.
  • Contribute actively to the quality management efforts within the organization by following established quality procedures and suggesting improvements where appropriate.
  • Perform other laboratory and quality-related duties as assigned to support overall departmental goals.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience or strong academic background in analytical chemistry techniques, including Gas Chromatography (GC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
  • Ability to operate and interpret results from UV-Visible and Infra-red (IR) spectrophotometers, including FTIR.
  • Proficiency with wet chemistry methods such as titration, pH analysis, and related quantitative techniques.
  • Experience or training in quality control testing for raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods in a chemical or related laboratory setting.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow written procedures, test methods, and documentation standards precisely.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in a hard science, with a strong preference for Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Other qualifying degrees may include Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Science, provided there is meaningful chemistry laboratory experience from school.
  • Entry-level candidates may qualify if they have completed an internship or have strong hands-on chemistry lab coursework.
  • Candidates with an associate degree in Science and at least 1 year of industry chemistry experience are also suitable.
  • Candidates with a high school diploma and 2–3 years of recent industry experience in a chemistry laboratory setting will be considered.

  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, raw material testing, in-process analysis, and finished goods testing is a plus.

Work Environment

This role is based in a QC laboratory within a chemical manufacturing plant, working closely with one other technician and a supervisor in the lab at all times. The initial training schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. After training, the position follows a 2-2-3 rotating schedule with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The lab uses a variety of analytical instruments, including GC, HPLC, UV-Vis, IR, FTIR, and equipment for titrations, pH measurements, viscosity, and other wet chemistry tests. The environment supports professional growth, with the organization expanding its facility and offering opportunities to move into areas such as formulations and quality assurance over time. The team has a high retention rate, and employees often build long-term careers. The dress code consists of jeans and a plain shirt, complemented by required personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for a chemical manufacturing and laboratory setting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
