Job description

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Biology Lab Assistant will work in coordination with the Biology Instructor to teach a variety of biological/life science lab courses and engage in a variety of learning support and instructional/institutional practices; mentor students by providing a positive and encouraging environment for learning; identify and implement assessment measures to achieve course, program, and college learning outcomes as well as work collaboratively within the Math-Science Division. The instructional load may consist of daytime or evening lab sessions.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • To understand and commit to the Mission of the College ~ To provide a student-centered learning environment where students can achieve their educational, personal, and career goals.
  • To foster a learning environment through the core values of students first, community, integrity, and innovation.
  • Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques and delivery methods, and remain current on discipline-specific and pedagogical issues, including inquiry-based instruction.
  • Support the college initiative to enhance the student learning experience by reviewing, evaluating, revising, developing, and implementing effective and relevant instructional technology in the classroom and labs such as institutional LMS, e-texts/open educational resources, video platforms, and relevant platforms (such as e-syllabus manager, e-evaluations, proctoring and integrity).
  • Review, evaluate, revise, develop, and implement program curriculum within the department to assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, requirements of business/industry, and/or higher education regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate co-requisite labs for biological/life science courses.
  • Meet all scheduled labs/clinics for the entire allotted time and provide learning opportunities in accordance with the philosophy, mission, vision, and core values of the College.
  • Maintain lab assignment to include preparation of lab materials, specimens and equipment essential for biological/life science labs as well as maintaining overall cleanliness and organization of laboratory and storage areas.
  • Set up and break down lab activities in accordance with instructor and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies to include ordering and purchasing of supplies when necessary.
  • Provide access to students through posted lab hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings, institutional committees, or activities required to maintain program and/or college accreditation standards.
  • Maintain appropriate records and collect relevant data on student outcomes and success.
  • Participate in assessment of student learning by implementing and adhering to the College Student Assessment Plan.
  • Recruit students and assist in student retention strategies.
  • Prepare syllabi and learning materials for classroom within college discipline, divisional and institutional guidelines.
  • Organize and maintain appropriate scholastic records for students and submit reports as required to the Records Office and appropriate administrative offices.
  • Assist, as requested, with the development of the term class schedule and the college catalog.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or higher in biological/life sciences field.
  • Knowledge of biological concepts and lab procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with groups, organizations, and institution.
  • Computer skills and ability to use technology in the classroom.
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas driverโ€™s license.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at Community College level.


Physical Requirements: With or without assistance

  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions
  • Able to sit and stand for extend periods of time
  • Able to lift up to 20 lbs. of instructional materials/equipment and carry short distances
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel stand, walk and be on your feet for extended periods for classroom demonstrations.
  • Ability to access classroom, office and other campus locations
  • Ability to move around in the classroom assisting students as needed
  • Work in typical office conditions
