Job description

Position Summary:  
Henderson Building Solutions is seeking a Project Engineer (Mission Critical) to join our team in Washington, D.C.
The Project Engineer performs routine aspects of field coordination, project management, or cost engineering requiring knowledge of basic engineering and construction principles under close supervision. The Project Engineer works with various departments to learn the basics of construction project management, site operations, scheduling, safety, and preconstruction. They will support local and national projects including face-to-face interactions with existing clients and trade partners while developing relationships. This position is intended as an entry level position for individuals to gain foundational experience within all aspects of managing a construction project. Duties may vary based on assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Project Managers with logistical tasks, including budgeting and client management.
  • Attend meetings, both internal and external when called upon by the primary construction manager.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining the project management software.
  • Assist in the assembly and distribution of equipment and construction bid packages.
  • Works closely with the project team monitoring the safety, cost and scheduling of construction projects.
  • Coordinate materials and change orders and expedite material on the job.
  • Coordinate with clients to understand project requirements.
  • Assist in the oversight of project design and deliverables, collaborating with project staff in preparing contract documents such as drawings and specifications.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly pay applications and monitoring project financial status.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and updated project folders.
  • Coordinate with engineers and other professionals to ensure project alignment.
  • Monitor and document project progress and alert construction managers of any issues that arise.
  • Implement effective time management strategies to optimize workflow.
  • Record meeting notes and distribute as needed.
  • Research contractors for the project bid process.
  • Contact subcontractors to obtain project documents.
  • Process contractually required documentation, including certificates of insurance, daily logs, RFIs, change order requests, etc.
  • Contact clients regarding service quality and client satisfaction and obtain reference letters and testimonials for marketing.
  • Follow all directions, task assignments and coaching offered by manager and other colleagues.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Prepare and coordinate shop drawings and submittals.
  • Learn about the impact of design changes and schedule slippages.
  • Gain knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction terminology and concepts.
  • Seek knowledge of critical path logic networks and accumulate data for use in maintaining realistic future planning and forecasting.
  • Attend regular client meetings and support preparation of statistical reports.
  • Assist in creating and coordinating jobsite records, including project directory, construction documents, subcontractor directory, daily reports, submittal logs, RFI logs, subcontractor correspondence, etc.
  • Make updates to as-built drawings as directed and interpret basic coordination drawings.
  • Participate in safety programs and maintain good owner relations.
  • Facilitate a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Support the planning, materials, building, and budget of construction projects.
  • Support negotiations and provide cost estimates for construction work and associated change orders.
  • Assist with business development activities by promoting Henderson Companies to existing and potential clients.
  • Participate in client, company, and industry events.
  • Grow personal network by building relationships with clients and industry professionals.
  • Develop and maintain customer relationships to enhance the company’s ability to procure projects.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of construction or engineering required. Common examples include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction science, construction engineering, and construction management.
  • Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of requisite education.
  • Construction experience preferred.
  • OSHA certification preferred.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills specifically within Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project.
  • Effective project management skills preferred.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment and to recommend and analyze pragmatic solutions for clients.
  • Possesses efficient communication skills.
  • Adaptable to changing work environments, work priorities and organizational needs.
  • Generates ideas for improvement, takes advantage of opportunities, suggests innovations.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in all core competencies as described and characterized in this job description.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

  • Travel requirements will vary depending on assignment.
  • Ability to work varying shift times depending on the project, i.e., night or weekends.
  • Ability to constantly move, traverse, navigate, ascend, descend, position oneself, etc. throughout worksites and precarious areas.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
