Job description

osition Summary and Job Magnitude

The Junior Maintenance Technician supports building operations by performing waste management, and basic maintenance support duties while assisting the Maintenance Services team. This role plays a key part in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall functionality of the property. The position is designed as an entry-level maintenance role and includes structured, on-the-job training in basic maintenance skills, building systems, and fire and life safety fundamentals. Working under the guidance of Maintenance Technicians and Senior Maintenance staff, the Junior Maintenance Technician develops hands-on experience while contributing to the day-to-day operational needs of the building.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Assist with or independently complete garbage compactor operations and general groundskeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe property environment.
  • Support Maintenance Technicians and Senior Maintenance Technicians during scheduled building walks and inspections.
  • Perform basic plumbing tasks, including faucet replacements or repairs, drain replacements or repairs, and identifying or troubleshooting common plumbing issues; provide basic plumbing triage as required.
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of building systems and maintenance fundamentals, including the understanding and operation of basic fire and life safety systems.
  • Complete routine and basic maintenance tasks efficiently with minimal supervision or assistance.
  • Physical Demands
  • Repetitive lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders and working at heights
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Working indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
  • Ability to grip, use, and manipulate basic hand tools and equipment.

Additional Duties

  • Provide custodial and cleaning support in common areas where required.
  • Assist with unit preparations, inspections, move-ins, and move-outs.
  • Maintain an up-to-date awareness of tools, supplies, and materials required for assigned tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Health & Safety

Work in the manner and with the protective devices, measures and procedures required by the OHSA, regulations, and Campus Living Centres (e.g. wearing safety shoes, confining hair, jewelry, or loose clothing around moving parts, etc.).

Online training modules and in-person training must be completed before starting regular duties.

WHMIS 2015 and GHS system, and standard operating procedures training must be completed prior to beginning regular duties.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred, not mandatory)

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to perform physical labour in a facilities environment.
  • Willingness to learn basic maintenance and building operations skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.
  • Positive attitude and team-oriented approach.

Experience Required: Previous experience in facilities, custodial, or labour roles is an asset but not required.

Working Conditions

Hours per Week: Scheduled 40 hours per week (may need to work more as required)

Indoor/ Outdoor: Indoor and some Outdoor

Level of Interruption: Moderate

Stress Level: Moderate overall stress level (Peak stress levels in May and September)

Travel Outside of Location: Minimal
