Summary:
Assist with and observe MRI procedures under strict supervision. Supports MRI technologists and clinical staff in preparing
patients, maintaining equipment areas, and learning the basic principles of magnetic resonance imaging. This is an entry-level apprenticeship role intended for individuals developing foundational knowledge and skills in MRI technology.
Responsibilities:
1. Patient Identification:
• Observe and assist in verifying patient identity using approved methods.
• Supports technologists in obtaining patient history and preparing documentation.
• Provides courteous assistance to patients and families under direct supervision.
• Learns and follows MRI safety screening procedures and department safety protocols.
• Practices effective communication to ensure patient comfort and understanding, with guidance from supervising technologists.
2. MRI Technology:
• Observes MRI technologists performing scans and begins learning basic MRI principles and cross-sectional anatomy.
• Gains familiarity with MRI equipment, controls, and safety features without independent operation.
• Assists with non-technical tasks related to MRI setup, such as preparing coils and organizing supplies.
• Develops understanding of imaging workflows, including PACS, order entry, and data handling, under supervision.
• Learns department protocols and observes how technologists select scan parameters and troubleshoot routine issues.
3. Contrast:
• Observes safe preparation and handling of oral and IV contrast materials.
• Learns the fundamentals of contrast protocols and eligibility screening under supervision.
• Does not perform IV insertion or contrast administration but assists in preparing supplies and documenting relevant information.
• Gains awareness of patient safety, contraindications, and post-contrast monitoring.
4. Image Transfer:
• Learns the basic principles of image storage and transfer within PACS and electronic medical record systems.
• Assists technologists in verifying image completeness and correct patient identifiers.
• Observes how studies are reviewed, segmented, and transmitted to appropriate systems.
• Supports documentation and record maintenance under guidance to prevent duplicate entries or billing errors.
5. Other Duties:
• Assists in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe MRI work area.
• Observes and learns scheduling procedures and workflow coordination.
• Provides logistical support to MRI technologists during procedures and patient preparation.
• Participates in educational activities related to MRI operations, safety, and patient care.
• Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and commitment to developing technical and clinical skills.

Education Requirements:
• Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited educational program in an applicable imaging discipline.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Position length aligned with ARRT or ARMRIT eligibility or a maximum of 18 months.
• The MRI Apprentice must meet requirements for the MRI Tech I position within 18 months
• Current BLS
