Description
The Technical Lab Lead provides hands-on leadership within the Technology Library's advanced lab environments, serving as the resident subject matter expert in artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital content creation.Â
This position bridges the gap between technology instruction and technical operations - delivering and supporting cutting-edge programming for advanced patrons and community members, while also providing first-level technical assistance across all makerspace and lab areas in coordination with the Lead Technology Specialist. The Technical Lab Lead champions innovation, mentors instructional staff, and helps position the library as a community hub for emerging technology exploration and applied learning.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
- Directly supervises, schedules, and supports Technology Center staff and/or volunteers.
- Works with Manager to design, develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive, multi-generational educational curriculum for the Technology Library. This curriculum should span all patron demographics-from youth and teens to adults and seniors-and equip them to utilize the library's advanced technological resources including 3-D printing, laser cutting, virtual reality, simulation systems, telehealth services, workforce development instruction, and AI education.Â
- Serves as the primary subject matter expert and hands-on technical leader for the library's AI, robotics, and digital content creation programs and lab environments.
- Designs, sets up, and maintains the technical configurations for advanced lab stations, including AI development workstations, robotics equipment, and any associated software environments.
- Develops and maintains lab-specific technical documentation, equipment guides, safety protocols, and patron-facing quick-start resources.
- Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues within the lab areas at the first level; escalate complex infrastructure or network issues to the Lead Technology Specialist.
- Assists the Lead Technology Specialist with preventive maintenance, equipment inventory, and operational readiness assessments for all lab and makerspace technologies.
- Maintains current knowledge of AI tools, platforms, and applications - including generative AI, machine learning introductory platforms, and AI ethics frameworks - to ensure programming reflects the current technology landscape.
- Designs and delivers advanced programs and workshops in artificial intelligence, including applied AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, image generators), introductory machine learning concepts, AI ethics and responsible use, and AI in the workplace.
- Designs and delivers robotics programs for multiple age groups and skill levels, utilizing platforms such as LEGO SPIKE Prime, VEX Robotics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or equivalent; includes programming fundamentals and engineering design challenges.
- Develops program materials - lesson plans, project guides, assessment tools, and digital tutorials - in collaboration with the Library Manager, contributing to the library's centralized curriculum repository.
- Supports the Library Manager in identifying opportunities to integrate AI, robotics, and content creation into broader workforce development and digital literacy pathways.
- Facilitates community learning events, hackathons, design challenges, and maker showcases that highlight lab capabilities and engage patrons in collaborative, project-based learning.
- Provides one-on-one and small group technical mentorship to patrons working on independent AI, robotics, or content creation projects.
- Trains and supports Technician/Instructors in basic operation of lab equipment to ensure adequate coverage during all service hours.
- Participates in community outreach events, school career days, and technology demonstrations to promote lab programs and attract diverse patron engagement.
- Performs other duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
