Staff Accountant
Red Cedar Construction Services is seeking a highly capable and detail oriented Staff Accountant to join our finance and accounting team. This is not an entry-level accounting role. The ideal candidate will be a strong, self sufficient accountant who can take ownership of key accounting functions, support month-end close, prepare reconciliations and journal entries, assist with financial reporting, and help improve accounting processes across a fast-growing construction and real estate development environment.
This position will gain exposure to several areas of the business, including construction accounting, real estate development, partnership accounting, debt management, project cost accounting, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, and daily accounting operations. The Staff Accountant will play an important role in ensuring financial information is accurate, timely, organized, and useful to management.
We are looking for someone who is proactive, analytical, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple entities and evolving processes. The ideal candidate is not only strong in accounting fundamentals but also interested in improving systems, streamlining workflows, and identifying better ways to complete recurring accounting tasks. Experience using AI tools, automation, or technology to improve accounting processes is a plus.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with month-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, account reviews, and supporting schedules.
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations and research discrepancies to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and post journal entries, including entries related to real estate transactions, HUD statements, accruals, prepaids, debt activity, intercompany transactions, and other recurring accounting items.
- Review KPIs, financial reports, and accounting schedules for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
- Support project cost accounting and job-related reporting across construction and development projects.
- Assist with bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, and daily accounting transaction review.
- Play a lead support role in debt management tracking, reporting, and maintenance.
- Prepare planned and ad hoc reports for management as needed.
- Assist with partnership accounting, real estate development accounting, and multi-entity accounting processes.
- Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained for accounting entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting support.
- Help identify accounting process gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Make recommendations for process improvements, automation opportunities, and better use of accounting systems.
- Support the implementation of accounting process improvements, reporting tools, and workflow efficiencies.
- Assist in evaluating and using AI tools, automation, and technology to streamline accounting tasks where appropriate.
- Support special projects related to accounting, finance, reporting, systems, and operational improvements.
- Partner with team members across departments to gather information, resolve issues, and ensure accurate financial records.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling financial and company information.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals, GAAP, journal entries, accruals, prepaids, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Prior experience in a Staff Accountant, Senior Accounting Assistant, Accounting Analyst, or similar accounting role.
- Ability to independently own recurring accounting tasks and follow them through to completion.
- Strong experience preparing balance sheet reconciliations and supporting month-end close.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel; advanced Excel skills strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Self-motivated, accountable, and proactive in identifying what needs to be done.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working with multiple entities, departments, and accounting priorities.
- Ability to identify inefficiencies in standard processes and recommend practical improvements.
- Experience with accounting systems, reporting tools, automation, or AI-supported process improvements is a plus.
- Experience in homebuilding, construction, real estate development, project cost accounting, or manufacturing is strongly preferred.
- Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software preferred.
- Ethical, honest, and able to handle confidential financial information appropriately.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent accounting experience may be considered in place of a four-year degree.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience preferred.
- Experience in construction, homebuilding, real estate development, project cost accounting, or multi-entity accounting strongly preferred.
- Experience recording accounting entries, preparing journal entries, and completing reconciliations required.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills required; high proficiency in Excel is a must.
Schedule
- Monday-Friday, standard daytime hours; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Occasional weekend work may be required.
Job Type
- Full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week.
Compensation
- $70,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on experience.

Work Environment
This role is primarily performed in an office-based environment with a business casual dress code. Standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets, are used in this role.
Physical Demands
The role requires the ability to talk and hear, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds, may be necessary.
