Entry Level Additive Manufacturing information

What is an entry level additive manufacturing?

An entry-level additive manufacturing job involves working with 3D printing technologies to create prototypes, parts, or products using digital designs. Responsibilities may include operating and maintaining 3D printers, preparing materials, post-processing printed parts, and performing quality control. These roles are common in industries such as aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and consumer goods. No prior experience is often required, but a background in engineering, manufacturing, or design can be helpful. Many positions provide on-the-job training to develop technical skills in printing methods, software, and materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in entry level additive manufacturing?

Entry Level Additive Manufacturing professionals should possess a basic understanding of 3D printing technologies, CAD software proficiency, and a high school diploma or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with additive manufacturing equipment, slicer programs, and safety protocols is often required, and entry-level certifications such as SME Additive Manufacturing Fundamentals can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong teamwork and communication skills are highly valued in this field. These competencies are vital for producing quality parts, adhering to design specifications, and thriving in collaborative, fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level additive manufacturing employees?

Entry-level employees in additive manufacturing often encounter challenges such as learning to operate complex printing equipment, troubleshooting print failures, and understanding different material properties. Adjusting to rapid changes in technology and production processes can also be demanding, especially in a fast-paced environment where innovation is key. However, most companies provide extensive on-the-job training and mentorship to support new hires through this learning curve. Embracing a proactive mindset and seeking guidance from experienced colleagues can help overcome these challenges and contribute to professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Review customer RFQs, technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Evaluate designs for manufacturability (DFAM) and identify potential manufacturing concerns before quoting.

  • Analyze part drawings, tolerances, materials, manufacturing processes, and production requirements.
  • Prepare and deliver quotes that can be successfully converted into production orders.
  • Ensure customer requirements are accurately captured and communicated throughout the quoting process.
  • Provide technical consultation and recommendations rather than simply generating pricing.
  • Support additive manufacturing, injection molding, and other manufacturing programs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams in a fast-paced environment where quote turnaround and responsiveness are critical.
  • Maintain ownership of assigned opportunities from initial review through quote completion.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, tolerances, and technical documentation.
  • Strong manufacturing knowledge with an understanding of how parts are produced.
  • Experience reviewing designs and identifying manufacturability concerns.
  • Background in manufacturing engineering, applications engineering, estimating, quoting, technical sales support, project engineering, or similar technical manufacturing roles.
  • Exposure to additive manufacturing, injection molding, machining, or other manufacturing processes.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to understand customer requirements from technical documentation.
  • Intermediate Excel skills including formulas and data analysis.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Team-player mentality with flexibility to work in a dynamic environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with ERP, quoting, estimating, or business systems preferred.
  • Self-starter who takes ownership and can grow into a Senior Solutions Engineer position.
  • Attitude, adaptability, and coachability are as important as technical experience.
  • Manufacturing experience is more important than pure quoting experience.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related technical field preferred but not required.
Work Environment

The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring a high level of responsiveness and adaptability. Team collaboration is essential, and the role involves working closely with various departments to ensure successful project execution.
