Job description

St Benedict Parish and Sacred Heart School in Yankton, SD is seeking a qualified candidate to serve in the role of School Bookkeeper / Services Support. This role serves to support the Parish Accounting Services Coordinator with parish bookkeeping services including accounts payable entry and dedicated account maintenance, payroll support and linked parish and school reimbursement along with other bookkeeping duties as time permits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable – Enter bills, create checks and research discrepancies if needed.
  • Enter deposits.
  • Posting in ParishSoft Accounting.
  • Monthly reporting-Reconcile all accounts, make adjusting entries if needed and post interest in ParishSoft Accounting.
  • Review and maintain dedicated accounts for balances that need to be paid.
  • Complete the parish shared expenses and invoice/write checks between the parishes.
  • Closely adhere to proper accounting controls while continuing to evaluate processes for improvement.
  • Special projects as needed and time allows.
  • Provide a welcoming, professional presence to parish visitors who telephone or walk into the office and respond to their needs with care and compassion.
  • Maintain and upkeep parish records.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Primary:
  • Willingness and ability to effectively make known the Catholic Church’s teachings through the varied ministry activities expected of this position.
  • Willingness and ability to act as an outstanding personal witness to the Catholic faith and religion by living both one’s professional and personal life in accordance with the doctrines and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, as embodied in the various documents of the Roman Catholic Church, including, without limitation, the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Willingness to work patiently with individuals who may have no knowledge of accounting and computerized accounting systems.
  • Effective communication with the parish personnel while performing parish accounting functions and ParishSoft Accounting
  • Maintain complete confidentiality
  • Understand all aspects of accounting functions for various sizes of entities.
  • Be open minded when working with Parish Priests and Staff and yet hold firm to procedures that are adopted for Canon or Civil Law or mandated by the Bishop.
  • Able to work as a team with a wide variety of people and yet keep individual projects running smoothly
  1. Education:
  • High School Diploma. Associate’s degree in Accounting preferred.
  1. Experience:
  • Basic accounting experience with accounts payable entry.
  • Effective communication with people
  1. Other Elements:
  • Independent thinking and able to analyze situations before action is taken

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • An understanding and working knowledge of all desktop applications included in the Microsoft Office Suite and various web applications.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment to think strategically, multitask, and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
  • Proven communication skills, and ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
