Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical Design & Fabrication (MD&F) Cell Level 2 / Level 3.

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector has an immediate need for a Manufacturing Engineer to support the Mechanical Design & Fabrication (MD&F) Cell as part of the subtractive manufacturing engineering team at our Linthicum, MD facility.

About MD&F

The MD&F cell is a one‑stop shop for machining, mechanical assembly, plating, and finishing. The subtractive manufacturing engineering team supports manufacturing operations of machining (Milling/Turning/Wire EDM), laser welding/cutting, mechanical assembly, plating and finishing to produce prototypes, non‑deliverable models, and production hardware that enable rapid design and producibility verification.

Manufacturing Engineers in MD&F have responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

Factory & Floor Support
  • Provide day to day manufacturing engineering support for machining, assembly, plating, painting, and finishing operations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with machined and assembled hardware in collaboration with operators, supervision, maintenance, and quality.
  • Support the execution of build plans to meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
Process Development & Documentation
  • Develop, optimize, and document manufacturing processes, routings, in-process verification plans (IVPs), and work instructions from complex drawings and CAD models.
  • Implement process changes and improvements using data‑driven methods
Tooling, Fixturing, and CAD/CAM Support
  • Identify process required and product specific tools, fixtures, and gages to support machining and assembly operations.
  • Design tooling and fixturing that achieve required tolerances and throughput; document designs and support fabrication and deployment to the floor.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM systems to interpret design intent and, where applicable, support programming for CNC equipment in coordination with Tool Design and NC programming teams.
Quality, Verification, and Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with quality engineering and inspection teams to develop manufacturing processes that integrate clear inspection strategies and verification methods.
  • Analyze process and product performance data (yield, scrap, rework, cycle time) to identify detractors and lead or support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Contribute to technology roadmaps and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance MD&F capabilities and capacity.
Cross Functional Collaboration & Customer Support
  • Collaborate with design engineering, program management, supply chain, and suppliers to ensure designs are producible and manufacturing requirements are clearly defined and met.
  • Provide manufacturing engineering inputs to quotations and proposals, including labor estimates, non‑recurring engineering (NRE), tooling, and capital equipment needs.
  • Support customer and internal reviews as needed, presenting manufacturing plans, process capability, and issue resolution status.
  • Collaborate with senior engineering peers to review plans, resolve complex issues, and grow technical depth, demonstrating openness to coaching and knowledge transfer.

The selected candidate must be able to multitask in a fast paced, high visibility environment; work effectively in a team; and communicate clearly in both written and verbal form.
