Farnsworth Group is seeking an Electrical Engineering Manager - Healthcare in one of the posting locations below. The Electrical Engineering Manager - Healthcare leads the planning, design, and delivery of normal and emergency power, lighting, and lowโ€‘voltage systems for healthcare and complex institutional facilities throughout the Midwest. The role blends deep technical expertise in healthcare electrical systems with project management, client leadership, and mentoring of engineers and designers within our multiโ€‘disciplinary architecture and engineering teams.

Posting Locations for this role:

Lisle, Normal, Peoria, or Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead and manage the electrical engineering team on healthcare projects, overseeing scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Serve as electrical discipline lead for hospitals, ambulatory care centers, imaging and procedure suites, and other healthcare facilities, coordinating with mechanical, architectural, structural, and technology disciplines.
  • Support projects primarily in Illinois and the greater St. Louis region, with periodic travel to client sites and Farnsworth Group offices across the Midwest for coordination meetings, site visits, and construction support.
  • Oversee and perform electrical design, including normal and emergency power distribution, essential electrical systems, lighting, fire alarm, grounding, and, as applicable, nurse call, lowโ€‘voltage, and lifeโ€‘safety systems.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical and healthcare codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 99, NFPA 101 and 110, the FGI Guidelines, and state and local Department of Health and facility review board requirements in Illinois, Missouri, and surrounding states.
  • Direct or review power system studies (shortโ€‘circuit, protective device coordination, arcโ€‘flash, load flow, and voltage drop) to support safe and codeโ€‘compliant designs.
  • Provide technical QA/QC review of drawings, oneโ€‘line diagrams, calculations, specifications, photometric studies, and reports prepared by the team.
  • Lead project management activities, including work planning, staff assignments, fee and scope management, changeโ€‘order negotiation, and monitoring of project financial performance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with healthcare clients and facility stakeholders; act as a trusted advisor on reliability, redundancy, future expansion, resiliency, and regulatory issues.
  • Mentor and coach electrical engineers and designers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture and promoting technical and professional growth.
  • Support business development by participating in pursuits, developing scopes and fees, and contributing to proposals and presentations for healthcare clients.
  • Promote consistent use of firm standards, BIM/Revit workflows, and coordination procedures for electrical systems, and champion continuous improvement in delivery processes.
  • Stay current with evolving codes, technologies, and best practices in healthcare electrical design, including decarbonization, microgrids, onโ€‘site generation, and resiliency strategies.
What Youโ€™ll Need
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Typically, 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in building electrical design, with significant experience on healthcare projects in an AEC/MEP consulting environment.
  • Demonstrated experience functioning as electrical lead and/or electrical project manager on multiโ€‘disciplinary healthcare projects, including responsibility for client interaction, design delivery, and coordination.
  • Strong knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), relevant NFPA standards for healthcare (e.g., NFPA 72, 99, 101, 110), FGI Guidelines, and applicable state/local codes and energy codes.
  • Proficiency with power distribution design, emergency/standby power systems, lighting and lighting controls, fire alarm and lifeโ€‘safety systems, and lowโ€‘voltage infrastructure for healthcare facilities.
  • Experience performing or overseeing electrical power system studies (shortโ€‘circuit, coordination, arcโ€‘flash).
  • Proficiency with Revit and BIM workflows for electrical systems; experience with SKM, ETAP, or similar analysis tools is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and deliver projects on time and within budget while maintaining high technical quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, design partners, and contractors at all stages of design and construction.
Nice to Haves
  • Experience with large hospital campuses, critical access hospitals, or major healthcare systems.
  • Experience with alternative delivery (Designโ€‘Build, IPD, designโ€‘assist) and early contractor collaboration.
  • Experience with HCAI/OSHPD or other state health authority approval processes, where applicable.
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, or other sustainability credentials.
