Job description

General Purpose:
The Mechanical / Process Engineering Department Manager is responsible for leading the mechanical and process engineers within McCarl's Technical Services (MTS). This role provides technical leadership, personnel management, and project oversight for heavy industrial projects across the power, chemical, metals, and oil & gas sectors. The Department Manager ensures engineering deliverables are technically sound, consistent with established standards, and aligned with project schedule, cost, and quality objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage the creation, review, and approval of engineering deliverables.
  • Lead the implementation of mechanical and process design principles and standards.
  • Develop and revise engineering design procedures and technical specifications.
  • Lead project kick-offs, design gate reviews, deliverable milestones, and project closeouts.
  • Provide technical oversight, mentorship, and peer review to engineering staff.
  • Provides technical support on construction or operating sites, as needed.
  • Coordinate the activities of the department including allocating, prioritizing, and reviewing the work of direct reports.
  • Monitor and report on the scope, schedule, budget, and technical risk of current projects.
  • Advance the department through training, knowledge sharing, and professional development of personnel.
  • Provide schedule and cost estimating support for proposals.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for innovation and capability growth.
  • Lead the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of team personnel.
  • Effectively communicate and project the principles of the Talent Advantaged Roadmap.
  • Collaborative mindset aligned with MTS's "Design-Build" business model.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with 10+ years of experience in heavy industry design.
  • Professional Engineer license is preferred.
  • Display a working knowledge of industry standard design practices, phased engineering delivery, and engineering management.
  • Understanding of design codes and standards (ASME, ASTM, API, ASHRAE, etc.) and industry best practices.
  • Experience developing engineering procedures, specifications, and design standards.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Knowledgeable of the use of analysis tools (CAESAR II, PV Elite, AFT Arrow or similar) and familiarity with use of 3D model tools (Plant 3D, Inventor, or similar).
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word with intermediate skills in Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to organize, allocate, prioritize, review, instruct and train subordinates.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with all levels in the company.
  • Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships, both internal and external.
  • Effective at technical communication.
