POSITION SUMMARY
Position: Director of Engineering
Reports to: President amp; COO
Location: Greenville, SC
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for Engineering, Production Design, Tooling, Maintenance, and Quality within a fast-paced metal manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for driving engineering execution, manufacturing efficiency, product quality, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.
Serving as a key technical leader, the Director of Engineering partners closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and customers to ensure products are designed and manufactured safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. This position oversees engineering activities from product and process development through production support and capital improvement initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering amp; Technical Leadership
  • Lead Engineering, Tooling, and Quality functions across the organization
  • Establish engineering standards, priorities, and technical direction aligned with business objectives
  • Drive accountability for engineering execution, operational support, and product quality
  • Develop engineering leadership and technical talent
Design Engineering amp; DFM/DFA Leadership
  • Lead design reviews to ensure products are optimized for manufacturability, quality, and cost
  • Drive Design for Manufacturing amp; Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles throughout the product lifecycle
  • Partner with Operations and Production teams to align designs with manufacturing capabilities and process requirements
  • Oversee engineering documentation including BOMs, routings, drawings, and ECN/ECR processes
Manufacturing Engineering amp; Process Optimization
  • Support production teams in resolving manufacturing, equipment, and quality issues
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action implementation
  • Drive process improvements across welding, forming, fabrication, machining, and finishing operations
  • Ensure engineering solutions are practical, sustainable, and aligned with shop floor operations
Tooling amp; Quality Oversight
  • Oversee tooling strategy and fixture development to support production and quality objectives
  • Partner with Quality to improve process capability, reduce scrap/rework, and strengthen manufacturing controls
  • Ensure quality standards and documentation are maintained across operations
Customer amp; Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Serve as a technical resource for customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
  • Support customer reviews, issue resolution, and new business opportunities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and Leadership teams to support company objectives
Continuous Improvement amp; Operational Excellence
  • Champion Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Drive improvements in throughput, efficiency, cost reduction, and operational performance
  • Utilize data-driven decision making to identify and implement sustainable improvements
Safety amp; Compliance
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards
  • Support risk assessments, corrective actions, and safe equipment/process design practices
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years of engineering leadership experience within metal manufacturing environments
  • Proven experience leading Engineering, Tooling, and/or Quality functions
  • Strong background in design engineering, DFM/DFA, and manufacturing process integration
  • Hands-on knowledge of welding, forming, machining, fabrication, and assembly operations
  • Experience managing technical teams and cross-functional initiatives
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems; AS400 preferred
  • Proficiency with CAD systems such as AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar platforms

Travel: 25% based on customer visits, supplier support, and operational needs
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is based primarily in a manufacturing environment and requires regular interaction with production operations and engineering teams. Occasional extended hours or weekend support may be required based on business demands.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires regular movement throughout a manufacturing facility, including walking, standing, climbing stairs, and navigating production areas. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. Exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures is expected in manufacturing areas. Good vision, hearing, and overall physical stamina are necessary to effectively support operations and maintain a safe working environment.
