Engineering Startup information

What is an engineering startup?

An Engineering Startup job involves working in a newly founded company focused on developing innovative technology or products. Engineers in startups often wear multiple hats, taking on tasks ranging from product design and prototyping to testing and deployment. Unlike larger companies, startups typically require employees to be adaptable, work in fast-paced environments, and contribute to various aspects of product development. This role can be highly rewarding, offering opportunities for hands-on experience, creativity, and rapid career growth.

What are some common challenges engineers face when working in a startup environment?

Engineers in startup environments often encounter challenges such as rapidly shifting priorities, resource constraints, and the need to wear multiple hats beyond their core technical role. You may be expected to iterate quickly on product designs, address unforeseen technical hurdles, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams like product and marketing. Flexibility and a proactive mindset are essential, as the pace can be fast and the scope of work may change frequently. However, these challenges come with significant learning opportunities and the potential to make a visible impact on the company's success and direction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an engineering startup, you need a robust understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving ability, and hands-on technical skills often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with product development tools, prototyping platforms, and agile project management systems such as Jira or Trello is highly valuable. Exceptional adaptability, entrepreneurial drive, teamwork, and strong communication skills set standout contributors apart in this fast-paced environment. These skills and qualities are critical because startup teams must efficiently innovate, iterate, and launch solutions amidst constant change and limited resources.

Job description

About Us

We're building the intelligence layer for the home: ambient, proactive, and built into a family of devices—a central hub, accessories, and the software that ties them together. We're a Series A startup backed by a tier-1 VC and technology partners, with an ex-unicorn founder. Early team, moving fast.

The Role

We're looking for a senior full stack engineer to help build the software foundation for a new category of consumer technology.

You'll work across the stack from customer-facing experiences to backend systems, AI integrations, and the infrastructure that powers them. This is a role for someone who loves building products from scratch, thrives in ambiguity, and wants to have a direct impact on what gets shipped every week.

As an early member of the team, you'll have significant ownership over technical decisions, architecture, product development, and engineering culture. You'll work closely with founders, design, product, and hardware teams to turn ambitious ideas into products people use every day.

What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and ship customer-facing products across web, mobile, and device experiences.
  • Develop scalable backend services, APIs, and infrastructure that power our platform.
  • Work across the entire product lifecycle, from early prototypes to production systems.
  • Partner closely with product, design, AI, and hardware teams to bring new experiences to life.
  • Build integrations between software, AI systems, and connected devices.
  • Improve reliability, performance, security, and developer experience across the stack.
  • Make thoughtful technical decisions while balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
  • Help define engineering culture, standards, and best practices as the team grows.
  • Own projects end-to-end and ship quickly with a high degree of autonomy.
You
  • 4+ years of experience building and shipping production software.
  • Strong full stack engineering skills with experience across frontend and backend development.
  • Comfortable working across multiple parts of the stack and learning new technologies when needed.
  • Experience building products from 0 to 1 or working in fast-paced startup environments.
  • Strong product instincts and a desire to build things people actually use.
  • Able to move quickly without sacrificing quality.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.High ownership, low ego, and strong collaboration skills.
Nice to Have
  • Experience building consumer products at scale.
  • Experience with AI-powered products, LLMs, agents, or conversational interfaces.
  • Experience with real-time systems, IoT, connected devices, or smart home products.
  • Experience with React, TypeScript, Python, mobile development, or cloud infrastructure.
  • Prior startup or founding engineer experience.
  • Strong interest in product design and user experience.
Why Join
  • Help define an entirely new category of consumer technology.
  • Work directly with experienced founders and an exceptional early team.
  • Own meaningful parts of the product from day one.
  • Build products that blend hardware, software, AI, and design.
  • Join early enough to shape both the technology and the company.
