Job description

MGS has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Tooling Project Manager to join our MGS Germantown team.

As a Tooling Project Manager at MGS, you are a member of the Engineering department and report to the Engineering Manager. This position serves as the technical and project coordination lead for plastic injection mold repairs, spare components, design changes, and replacement tooling. The role translates tooling needs into clear scopes, customer and supplier communications, quotes, approvals, schedules, and documented status, then drives each project through completion.

Below are additional duties and responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary technical and project coordination contact for mold repairs, spare components, mold design changes, tooling improvements, and replacement molds.
  • Partner with the Toolroom Manager, Engineering Manager, Program Manager, Quality, Production, and other stakeholders to define the technical problem, project scope, requirements, urgency, customer responsibility, and desired outcome.
  • Prepare clear technical communications, scope-of-work documents, quote packages, proposals, photographs, drawings, CAD markups, cost summaries, and timing information for internal review, customers, and tooling suppliers.
  • Communicate directly with customers and the assigned Program Manager to clarify technical requirements, answer questions, resolve misunderstandings, and obtain timely decisions and approvals.
  • For mold damage or other work that does not require customer involvement, coordinate with the internal mold-building operation or qualified external mold shops, including issue communication, scope confirmation, quotation, approval, work authorization, scheduling, and follow-up.
  • Obtain and review tooling quotations for completeness and accuracy, then coordinate purchase requests, work orders, shipping, receiving, logistics, and required documentation.
  • Maintain an accurate project tracker showing scope, owner, supplier, quoted and approved cost, milestones, approvals, risks, open actions, target dates, and current status for each tooling project.
  • Drive assigned projects to conclusion through regular follow-up, timely escalation of cost or schedule risks, status reporting, and participation in customer and internal project meetings.
  • Verify that repairs, spare components, and design changes meet the approved scope; communicate completion; and close all related records, approvals, drawings, and project documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of on-hand mold spare components and general tooling components, including quantity, location, condition, usage, reorder needs, and replacement status.
  • Prepare mold condition, quality, repair-history, and status documentation for customers when requested, and recommend and pursue timely customer approval for replacement molds or major refurbishment when needed.
  • Identify recurring tooling issues, documentation gaps, and opportunities to improve mold reliability, spare availability, project lead time, cost control, and communication.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

A qualified Tooling Project Manager candidate would fulfill these requirements:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in tool and die, mold design, mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, project management, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and practical tooling experience will be considered.
  • Three or more years of experience involving plastic injection molds, mold design, mold building, mold repair, tool maintenance, or technical tooling project coordination.
  • Strong working knowledge of injection mold construction, mold components, hot runner systems, spare components, common failure modes, repair methods, and the implementation of mold design changes.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and review mold drawings, part drawings, specifications, and CAD models, and to translate technical findings into clear instructions and customer communications.
  • Experience coordinating quotations, purchasing requests, work orders, suppliers, logistics, schedules, budgets, customer approvals, and project documentation.
  • Strong written, verbal, and technical communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with Toolmakers, Engineers, Program Managers, suppliers, plant leadership, and customers.
  • Demonstrated organization, attention to detail, and follow-through while managing multiple tooling projects with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience in a regulated manufacturing environment and knowledge of quality systems, GMP, and GDP are preferred.
