Engineering Project Manager Remote information

What does an Engineering Project Manager do in a remote role?

An Engineering Project Manager working remotely oversees engineering projects from concept to completion, coordinating teams, resources, timelines, and budgets, all while working outside of a traditional office setting. They use digital tools to manage project schedules, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure that deliverables meet technical and quality standards. Remote Engineering Project Managers must be skilled at virtual collaboration, problem-solving, and adapting to different time zones and work cultures. Their responsibilities may also include risk assessment, reporting progress, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

How does an Engineering Project Manager effectively coordinate with remote teams across different time zones?

As a remote Engineering Project Manager, effective coordination often involves leveraging communication tools like Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms to keep teams aligned. You'll need to set clear expectations, establish overlapping working hours for key meetings, and document project decisions to ensure everyone stays informed. Regular check-ins, transparent progress tracking, and fostering a culture of open communication help address challenges related to time zone differences and remote collaboration. Building strong relationships and trust with team members is essential for keeping projects on track and ensuring successful delivery.

Mechanical Engineers typically work on designing and testing mechanical systems, often on-site or in hybrid settings. While both roles require engineering credentials, their work environments and daily tasks differ significantly, catering to different industry needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Project Manager (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Project Manager (Remote), you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management methodologies, and typically a relevant degree or PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software like Jira, Asana, or Microsoft Project, and remote collaboration tools such as Slack or Zoom, is essential. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate dispersed teams and manage project challenges effectively. Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your project management and electrification expertise in a cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside a collaborative and dynamic team, both locally and globally.

You'll play a key role in delivering electrification solutions that meet project targets and ensure seamless coordination across diverse teams and stakeholders. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with on-shore and off-shore engineering teams, construction teams, and external stakeholders, ensuring seamless integration and execution of electrification systems. You’ll also manage interfaces, oversee risks, and drive compliance with performance standards, and much more.

You’ll specifically take care of coordinating design and sourcing needs with project objectives, managing risks, and ensuring the successful delivery of electrification subsystems, but also lead collaborative initiatives to enhance communication and efficiency across teams.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Coordinating design needs, sourcing requirements, and project targets, including preparing business cases and client presentations

  • Managing risks through identification, regular updates to the risk register, and coordinating mitigation actions

  • Overseeing requirements capture, allocation, and closure at each project stage, including V&V activities

  • Defining and updating design production KPIs, conducting root cause analysis, and collaborating with internal stakeholders

  • Managing modifications from identification to implementation across electrification subsystems

  • Preparing and coordinating the DFQ process with stakeholders in design, safety, cybersecurity, and subsystems

  • Proposing and implementing innovative ways of working, including remote team collaboration and improved communication

  • Coordinating target price definitions with relevant stakeholders

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering (mandatory)

  • Professional Engineer designation (preferred) or in progress

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or Project Management (desirable)

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in delivering railway projects, preferably electrification projects

  • Demonstrated knowledge of railway design and build projects, including operations and maintenance aspects

  • Good understanding of OCS design and delivery

  • Basic knowledge of power supply environments and interfaces with catenary systems

  • Familiarity with Canadian standards and common practices is an asset

  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and resilience

  • Fluent in English; a second language is appreciated

Things you’ll enjoy Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from boring daily routines

  • Work with new security standards for rail electrification

  • Collaborate with diverse and supportive teams across multiple geographies

  • Contribute to innovative and impactful projects

  • Utilise our flexible and inclusive working environment

  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries

  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning opportunities

  • Progress towards leadership or technical expert roles

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

Compensation

The expected compensation for this role is $135,000 – $180,000 CAD per year, plus benefits and eligibility for an annual performance bonus. Final compensation will be based on skills, experience, and internal equity.
