What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Manufacturing Engineering Manager

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership role for an engineering professional who is ready to own something significant. As the Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Americase, you will lead a cross-functional team of designers, programmers, and an industrial engineer through the full lifecycle of design-to-production; transforming customer requirements and proof-of-concept designs into fully manufacturable, production-ready solutions.

You will be the organization's primary engineering execution hub, receiving work through both direct Sales intake and the NPI channel, and setting the standard for how engineering work gets done, with a focus on quality, speed, and reliability. This is a role built for someone who combines deep technical grounding in manufacturing engineering with the leadership skills to develop teams, build systems, and drive continuous improvement across the function.

If you have spent your career building things that work (processes, teams, standards, and products) and you are ready to lead an engineering function where your decisions matter from the drafting stage all the way to the production floor, we want to hear from you.

What You Will Lead
  • Own, formalize, and continuously improve the company's design standards and styles product catalog;transforming what exists today into a documented, usable reference that Sales can use to pre-qualify and route incoming customer requests.
  • Collaborate with Sales to ensure the catalogremainscurrent, clearly communicated, and accurately reflects organizational capabilities and capacity.
  • Triage and prioritize work arriving from both the Sales and NPI channels, revising schedules across multiple work streams to best meet customer commitments.
  • Lead the engineering team through the complete cycleofdesign, approval, CNC programming, and FAI packet release, ensuring every handoff to production is complete and productionready.
  • Establish and enforce a formal design review and approval workflow with clear handoff criteria so work leaving the team is consistently defectfree.
  • Apply knowledge of CNC programming, machine capabilities, and manufacturing methods to guide the team's technical decisions and resolve complex engineering challenges.
  • Develop and maintain bills of materials for manufactured products, including design changes and instructions.
  • Serve as the formal approval gate for all FAI reports following Manufacturing Readiness execution — assess findings, direct corrective action, anddeterminewhen issues require formal root cause analysis.
  • Review, approve, or reject RCA documentation for FAI-related issues; direct the engineering team to execute approved redesign or reprogramming changes.
  • Ensure all approved changes are fully incorporated into the final manufacturing-ready packet before release back to production.
  • Consult with Production Operations, Quality,Purchasing, and Production Planning as neededregardingmodifications to work orders and prints.
Metrics, Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Track and report on design-to-production cycle time, FAI packet quality, and rework rates; use data to drive recommendations for forecasting and improvement.
  • Establish production and quality control standards for the department, incorporating measurable metrics including cycle time, handoff quality, and defect reduction.
  • Develop and implement methods and procedures designed toeliminaterecurring operating problems and raise the quality of team output over time.
  • Direct and coordinate all department activities; plan andestablishoutput priorities aligned with operational effectiveness and cost targets.
  • Lead staff development through thoughtful selection, onboarding, training, and performance management, including scheduled performance reviews and monthly coaching sessions for all direct reports.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders on staffing needs; lead the department's hiring and onboarding processes.
  • Foster a team culture built on accountability, collaboration, and continuous growth.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Maintain a strong, trust-based working relationship with Manufacturing Readiness as the primary feedback source for FAI results and build issues.
  • Collaborate with NPI to ensure smooth handoff of approved proof-of-concept designs into the engineering team's workflow.
  • Coordinate with Engineering Project Manager(s) on scheduling, priorities, and customer commitments across work intake channels.
  • Engage Sales as needed tomaintainthe design catalog and ensure direct route requests are thoroughly reviewed before reaching the team.
What We Are Looking For
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical , Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related field* OR 8 or more years of directly relevant manufacturing engineering experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • Leadership Experience: 5 or more years of supervisory or management experience in a production engineering environment, with a demonstratedtrack recordof leading, developing, and holding accountable a team of technical professionals.
  • Manufacturing Engineering Expertise: Strong working knowledge of CNC programming, manufacturing methods, machine capabilities, and product technology, with experience translating designs into production-ready deliverables.
  • Standards & Quality Ownership: Demonstratedexperience establishing, documenting, and enforcing design and manufacturing standards used by cross-functional teams.
  • Communication: Excellent oral, written, and technical communication skills witha track recordof effective collaboration across design, programming, NPI, and production functions.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong project and time management capabilities; able to manage priorities across multiple simultaneous work streams without losing detail or quality.
  • Analytical Aptitude: Solid math skills and comfort with engineering calculations, metrics tracking, and data-driven decision-making.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing a cross-functional engineering team including designers, programmers, and industrial engineers.
  • Familiarity with First Article Inspection (FAI) processes, documentation standards, and corrective action workflows.
  • Experience working directly with a Manufacturing Readiness or production operations team as a review and feedback partner.
  • Background in case, packaging, or custom manufacturing environments.
  • Experience building or formalizing design standards or a product catalog used by sales or customer-facing teams.
What Success Looks Like

We are not looking for someone to manage a status quo; we are looking for a leader who builds something better. Within the first year, a successful Manufacturing Engineering Manager will have:

  • Built a cohesive team that executes consistently across multiple work intake channels, with clear standards, shorter cycle times, and production-ready output at every handoff.
  • Transformed partially existing design standards into a documented, usable catalog that Sales actively leverages to pre-qualify incoming work.
  • Established a formal FAI review and RCA process that reduces repeat issues and earns the trust of Manufacturing Readiness and production leadership.
  • Earned the confidence of senior leaders and cross-functional partners through reliable output, proactive communication, and measurable quality improvement.
  • Demonstratedleadershipbehaviors and operational results that position the team, and the individual, for continued growth within the engineering organization.
Why This Role
  • Own the engineering function ,not just a piece of it. This role has real authority, real accountability, and real impact on production outcomes.
  • Work alongside experienced leaders in NPI, Manufacturing Readiness, Sales, and Operations who value engineering as a strategic function.
  • Bring your standards, your process instincts, and your leadership style to a team that is ready to be built into something excellent .
  • Be part of a regulated production environment where precision, craftsmanship, and engineering discipline are valued, not just expected.

Pre-Employment Requirements: All offers are contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check prior to start date. Candidates must comply with pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with Company policy for the duration of employment.
