WHOOP is hiring a Software Engineering Manager to lead the Health Records engineering team responsible for building the secure, scalable platform that powers ingestion, and utilization of clinical health data. This team enables WHOOP to integrate with external healthcare ecosystems and transform complex health records into meaningful insights that drive personalized experiences and improve long-term health outcomes for our members.
As an Engineering Manager III, you will be responsible for both technical and organizational leadership. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, Security, and Platform Engineering to define the long-term technical strategy for Health Records while building and growing a high-performing engineering team. You will guide architectural decisions, foster operational excellence, and create an environment where engineers can do their best work while delivering reliable, secure, and scalable healthcare systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, continuous learning, and psychological safety.
  • Define and execute the technical strategy for WHOOP's Health Records platform, ensuring systems are scalable, reliable, secure, and extensible as new healthcare capabilities are introduced.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver member-facing experiences powered by health record data.
  • Guide the architecture and evolution of systems responsible for ingesting, processing, governing, and exposing health record data from external healthcare ecosystems, including standards such as FHIR.
  • Establish engineering best practices around system design, operational excellence, security, privacy, and regulatory compliance for highly sensitive health data.
  • Drive execution through effective planning, technical prioritization, and cross-team collaboration while balancing long-term platform investments with product delivery.
  • Coach engineers and engineering leaders through career development, performance feedback, hiring, and succession planning while raising the technical bar across the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale backend systems and distributed platforms in production environments.
  • 3+ years of experience leading engineering teams, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and developing senior engineers and technical leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to define technical strategy and deliver complex, cross-functional initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture, cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, APIs, and operational excellence.
  • Experience building secure systems that manage sensitive customer or healthcare data; familiarity with healthcare standards such as FHIR is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with Product, Design, Data Science, and executive stakeholders to align technical investments with business outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence technical direction across organizational boundaries.
  • Passion for building inclusive, high-performing engineering organizations and creating an environment where teams can thrive.
  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
